Very good points.

My concern is...

When will the 45nm G0 1333MHz Quads be available and what will the prices be like?
I ask this because I think for my system, that would be the next REALLY noticable step up.

welcome to penryn.

I should be one of the first on the forum who gets a Penryn V8 when they hit public sales.

I doubt i'll ever get my hands on the ES sample for that chip.

ack... my appologies.. fingers move faster then my brain most of the times.

hmmmm... i may have to look into getting a sound card then. But i have like almost no space to install one thanks to my Full cover blocks, on SLI.

rest assured aigo, creative is coming you with pci-e 1x cards which would fit nice and snug just above your first video card on a 680i board. let me dig the article up... here you go

its too bad though that Auzentech is not planning a pci-e version of their Prelude. that card is going to kick so much ass. but still, going from on board to any sound card is a huge difference, and going from on board to x-fi for gaming is like day and night.

This is only true if you are using some high end speakers or outputting to a receiver. If the OP is using headphones, even quality ones, the difference is close to nil.

So i guess no sound card it is!

Also I dont use Photoshop or video edit and I heard multitasking is only helpful if the programs support Quadcore which many dont.

In this sense I think its a better buy to get the E6850 dont you?

For gaming, it's going to mainly come down to the specific games you play and the resolution/settings at which you play them. You use a 22" monitor that has a resolution of 1680x1050. A couple of observations about that--

1) the 8800 ultra is overkill for that resolution, though one could argue the speed bump over the non-ultra might help in future games. But, again, the other side could argue back that even the ultra might not be adequate for future games such as Crysis. No telling at this point. But my gut tells me that, if building right now, get a GTS 320/640 only and then upgrade to the refresh that will be out later this year.

2) your 16x10 resolution is in an area where CPU *speed* bumps aren't going to show much benefit. I can link you to benches at 16x12 (I know, not the exact same) where a 2.4ghz C2D equals a 3.9ghz C2D with the same video card. Granted, some exceptions exist (namely in RTS and online games).

So, I see no real reason *not* to choose the quad over the 6850. At your resolution, you'll likely not notice any speed bumps the 6850 might get over the quad, and, in the future, if what the game developers have promised (full use of quads) gets delivered, your quad will be ready with all 4 cores, whereas the 6850 will still only have 2.

IMO, drop the GPU down and save some money to get a 320/640 that will retain most of its resale value once the new cards arrive. And your choice of CPU should be either a quad for $266 or a cheaper C2D like the 4300 for $115. It doesn't appear you have much use for a quad at the moment, so an argument could be made either way. But if you're willing to spend $266 on a CPU, it should *not* be the e6850. There is better value elsewhere.

Thanks for the reply, I shouldve noted that the reason i Did not buy a 24" tv is because I bought a Samsung HLT5687 1080p tv just this month and will be using DVI-HDMI on it, and the Computer will be hooked up to the TV also via dual DVI (using one at a time only though), and having two 1920X1080 displays would be kinda ridiculous, that being said i wont be playing on the 1080p tv all the time, I will be using the monitor alot, but i just cant justify spending 300 more on a good 24" screen whe ni have a good 1080p tv here already.

I think ive decided to go quad knowing full well that I'll be able to OC well with the Mobo Im choosing and having the Ultra 120 to cool it down.

Thanks for the help, does my display buying decision make sense? lol

Anyways im sold on the motherboard, it seems to bench relatively close to other boards but seems to be super stable for OC'ing

so now the last question is what RAM should i be buying?

the 3 im looking at are these and im leaning towards the crucial ballstix but it seems the patriots run at 1066 @ timings of 5-5-5-9 comparing to the usual 5-5-5-15

I was all excited about this card (moving up from mobo sound) until I noticed (under specifications) that it appears you have to use the Creative driver... wtf?

And most of the screen caps are of creative apps. I don't want to throw down a single dollar if I have to worry about those drivers bugging my box out.

And I'm on Vista so isn't EAX real hard or something? Maybe I should take this to the audio forum.

Good choices all around but I doubt that you will see an X38 board in August. I'm going for the P5K Premium I can't wait anymore.

You should get the cheapest brand name DDR2 800 ram for C2D as it does not benefit from faster memory (unless you consider 1-2% difference worth spending double for). Corsair DDR2 800 is available for roughly $85 after MIR on Newegg.

There have been countless benchmarks on the net that show C2D receives very little benefit from memory speed and memory at DDR2 800 performs almost identically to DDR2 1066 other than WinRAR.

Who knows for sure when X38 will arrive? Man, I'm chomping at the bit to order after the July 22nd price drops and I just can't decide if I want to wait for X38 for SLI, 680i for SLI now, or just get P35 and upgrade to whatever SLI motherboard is going to be the best at the time I'm ready for SLI.

Case: COOLERMASTER CM Stacker 832
PSU: Enermax Galaxy 1000W
Mainboard: Asus P5KDeluxe WiFi-AP
Memory: (im stuck, either Patriots, Corsairs or OCZ reapers...)
Soundcard: X-Fi audio(cheapest one!)
CPU: C2D Q6600 or E6850
CPU-cooler: Thermalright ULTRA120 Extreme +Scythe S-FLEX (SFF21F)
System/Games: Western Digital Raptor 1500ADFD
Graphics: eVGA 8800 Ultra
Monitor: Samsung 226BW and Samsung HLT56871080p (have both)

So its just up the CPU and RAM im deceiding on, my computer store finally knows about JULY22 they didnt before, but now they told me there is a major price drop, which is good cause i didnt want to buy the CPU from somewhere else also.

Ive changed the 3 RAM kits im really looking at the Corsair dominators, Patriot Extremes, and OCZ Reapers.

the link Buckfutter posted is interesting, seems like the e6850 was running orthos for about 10 hours at 4 GHZ using a tuniq tower, the poster was also using a P5K Premium mobo, which I heard performs the same unless Water cooling is used, though it runs a little cooler, Im thinking of buying a Chipset cooler for the P5K deluxe, I dont want to wait for the premium and pay a higher price and have to wait for updates to make it work. Rather just get the P5K deluxe now, anyone know of a good chipset cooler for the P5K?

I've already started to order parts from different webshops. Some parts is not in stock, like the TT 120U Extreme, Ballistix PC2-8500 and the Coolermaster 832 case.
I'm also still waiting for the release of the E6850 CPU.

While i wait for the CPU, i'm lapping the TT 120U Extreme.
I'm not sure if i dare to lap the CPU itself. Seems very risky.

Because it's got two more cores than a dual core...

Seriously though, it drives me crazy also when people recommend a CPU, HD, RAM or video card without having any idea what the other member may be using it.

You can't really blame them, it's all they know.

This is really getting nerve-wrecking!!

I would love having the latest stuff even though I can't afford it but...

I like the idea of Quads but at the same time I'm really into gaming and not much else really (at least, nothing a dual can't handle).
My question is that with a G0 Quad...what OC would I be limited to based on my cooling capacity (Tuniq Tower 120)?
Whereas I'm sure I could hit 4GHz with the E6850 (all at release will be G0).
