I've been following this thread with great interest, but I have a quick question if the OP does not mind.

I was originally just going to get a Q6600, but now I am thinking I would be better off with an E6850. I will pretty much just use this for gaming at 1920x1200 and I like my eye candy way up. I will not be overclocking (I still have not gotten the hang of it, so I just do not bother).

So which is the best for that scenario and also, which one is easiest to drop in my existing rig without any other upgrades (I know my RAM is slow, but I really don't want to upgrade it if I can avoid it)? Essentially I just want to get one of these 2 CPUs and drop it in and go.

Current rig:

CPU: Intel Core2Duo E6600 2MHz
Motherboard: Intel D975XBX2
Memory: 4096 MB of Corsair DDR2 PC2-5400
Video Card: Diamond 2900XT Crossfire
Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 16MB 320.0 GB @ 7500 RPMS
Monitor: Dell 2407 WFP
Sound Card: Creative X-Fi Xtrememusic
Operating System: Windows Vista Ultimate 64-Bit
PSU: Thermaltake Toughpower 1200 Watt Modular Power Supply

Sorry for the hijack OP!

Thanks in advance for the help.

*pours water over myself to protect from oncoming flames*

The average G0, im guessing can do 3.6ghz 400fsb x 9 @ 1.36-1.4Vcore real.

How hot is this your going to ask? Ive been playing with a ES sample. She does 3600 @ 1.38Vcore real. On my P35 the voltage setting on bios is 1.385. Voltage actual reporting at 1.38V.

I had her on a bench platform without water using an Air sink. This is from a lapped 2000grit, which makes no difference from a lapped 700grit, Thermalright Ultra120.

Her idle temps was about 10-15C over ambients. Load temps wouldnt get hotter then 53-60C 53 would be the low point, and 58C high point. Mid noon, logged by coretemp.

I was extremely impressed with this because it took water on a B3 chip to pull this off.

My max on water on this chip is 4100 = 410 x 10 @ 1.49 Vcore real. Bios setting is 1.495V

The heat load @ this setting gets close to a B3. Currently on water she never breaks 60C, but im on a extremely exotic watercooling setup. I would like to say, 3.6ghz is definitely possible with a tuniq or thermalright ultra if lapped.

On water, you should be able to shoot for the 3.8-4.0ghz ranges if thats your favor.

If you dont care about overclocking, or your just looking for mild overclocks, then Ignore my post.

My disclaimer.

those are some sweet results you have there aigomorla....

2questions... are you going to have a e6750 or e6850 for testing yourself? im not patient enough to wait for a g0 stepping...

btw what is this lapping thing you mention?

How do you get an average by testing one unit ?

I've ordered a GIGABYTE GA-P35C-DS3R. Link
As you can see its a very cheap Mainboard, but got the highest score in several tests. What makes the more expensive mainboards, expensive? I mean, why pay so much more for a mainboard when you can get a cheap one that is just as good?

Anyway, Any of you got experience with this board?

Yeah I admit I am torn now. I am definitely going to OC and I use my PC 90% ONLY for gaming; but I do burn DVD's, have Anti-virus running in the background while gaming, etc.

Do I get the e6850 or just wait and get the Q6600 with GO and OC that baby bigtime and be future-proofed for a while?

For the people who are looking to get the E6850 G0 stepping, aren't you currently in the same lottery that the Q6600 people are in? Meaning, from what I have seen, there are E6850 that are based on the old stepping (B3?). I was originally of the belief that the E6850 was a new part that was only created with G0, but I could swear I read something in the past day or so that showed differently. Can anyone confirm?

I'm still on the fence between the Q6600 and E6850 too. Im mainly a gamer myself but the answer isn't a clear one. I keep questioning how well all these nextgen games are going to support quad core (ie Unreal 3, Crysis, etc.) The developers have been claiming all 4 cores will be utilized but I'm skeptical how much. I wish they would release numbers but we'll never know until the games are released toward the end of the year unfortunately.

i'm also building a new rig after the price drops. i'm still using a socket-a athlon xp build isgust;

it's mainly a gaming rig and from Anand's review this week it seems the E6850 is the way to go for me. my main concern is trying to pick a motherboard. i was considering the Abit IP35 but i have an old HP printer that uses a // port and i see no reason to dump it so i need a board wiht a // port.

gigabyte alone seems like they have 2349832984 different P35 boards.. it all gets so confusing.

it seems many here are going for the Asus P5K premium, i'll have to read up on that more, maybe the baseline P5K would be better for me.

any ideas?

That's my plan. I am not too fond of Kentsfield.

the ex50 chips are all brand new chips and all are G0 stepping. The problem with the Q6600 is that it is NOT new but it is now being made with the G0 stepping, too. Signs point to the G0 being a much better chip, especially in the quad where heat is such a huge problem. Tank guys have made a preorder list for G0 Q6600's, and they are now saying that it could be sept before they actually show up.

Because i have 4 quadcores currently.

3 B3's Q6600, X3220, X3210

1 G0 Q6600 ES

from observation on how these girls look, this is my inital estimate. The G0 should be able to hit 3.6ghz from voltage ranges of 1.36 - 1.41

Now as mark says i could be wrong. But im willing safely guess the first batches of Q6600 G0's will have no issues, and should perform very nicely.

After the first batches run out, your on your OWN. Think of the E6600 saga, how the older chips were better then the newer ones. In fact i cant think of any Old Bin E6600 that couldnt do 3.6ghz.

Hi there,

Same debate here. But I won't upgrade my CPU in at least 2-3 years, so I should go with the Q6600 I hear, BUT.. I'm going to California in a few hours and will be there for the price cut, how can I know if its the G0 stepping by just looking at the box?

Hope Frys has at least the E6850 on the 22th.. but now I hear there's no-G0 E6850s as well.. so the question remains the same, how can I know which one is it? Pardon my ignorance.

Thanks in advance,

Chofo

P.S. I'm not familiar with this, will the price cut be effective like right away on the 22th at stores?

I wouldn't plan on seeing any G0 Q6600's any time soon ...

I'm not sure if there is any way to tell from the Box what the stepping is ..

One thing you can see is the FPO/Batch# It will look something like this..

L719A844 - This is from a 6850 GO ..

The ' 719 ' tells us the processor was manufactured week 19 of 07 ...

If you don't see a number close to that, or later it is probably not a GO ..

Most Q6600's you find will be from 06 - Which will definitely not be G0's ...

Got my Dell Ultrasharp 2407WFP yesterday. Its a fantastic monitor for everything except FPS games. Like all other LCD monitors i've tried, this one is no exception. I guess i was kidding myself when i thought i could buy a LCD monitor that fill my gaming requirements.
I may be very picky, but i've used CRT monitors now for 12 years and i'm still waiting for a LCD that doesn't feel sluggish compared to a CRT when playing FPS games.

I might have ruined my ability to appreciate playing on LCD monitors cause of that.
I need confirmation. Is it just me or is CRT's still the superior monitors for FPS gaming?
On the forums of my home country they tell me i'm crazy, am i?
