yeah, they went there yesterday. The day before they were at 429 or something like that, the day before that they were at 480. I wish that you could see the stepping on a chip before buying it there. They could charge a hefty premium for a G0 over a b3 if only people knew what the chip was!

Would it be wise to go for E6850 or Q6600?
If you want it for 2-3+ years get the Q6600. If you are like me and planning a penryn upgrade in 12-18 mos then get an e6750/e6550 because you will get similar/better performance out of those for now in all but SC, and even in that game the performance benefits are debatable.

Similar choices here - now, the question I have for you, is it worth going DDR3 on this? Is there a real performance advantage, assuming you're willing to pay for it? I was thinking of it, and I'm kind of stuck in the DDR2 vs. DDR3 limbo.

Do the current crop of P35 boards support the Penryn? (specifically something like the Asus P5K3...)

All p35 boards support penryn. nvidia 680i chipsets are designed to but the mobo makers have to enable it via a bios flash. DDR3 just got better with the new z9 chips, up to 2000mhz now. It's hard to justify the incredible expense right now, but who knows what prices will be like in a year? Maybe a ddr2/ddr3 combo board would be a smart move right now. I already bought an abit ip35 pro and 2x1gb crucial ballistix pc2 8500 b/c ddr2 is so cheap right now.

Quit saying the Q6600 won't be out till September!! I've already started ordering parts. On the way so far:

Aspevia X-Pleasure-BK Full Tower Case
Antec TruePower Trio 650W
(and...I splurged!)
Ultrasharp Dell 2407WFP 24" Monitor!

I'm also getting an 8800GTX, so I hope I can play at 1920x1200 with decent framerates. Up to now, I've kept everything at 1280x1024 or less if it was not smooth. I thought about a 22" being basically a 1280x1024 except it's wider on both sides. I figured if I had to, dropping to 1680x1050 will simply center inside my 24" esentially giving me a 22" monitor anyway.

Are we better off waiting for the price plng dust to settle, so that we might have a better shot at getting a G0 Stepping ? Thoughts ?

The problem with constantly waiting is that there always seems to be something much better and "worth waiting" for a month away - which means you never build! At some point you have to take the plunge. I'm victim of this too - always waiting. It's been 4 years since my last build (barring minor upgrades like a video card change), and I'm itching again, so I'm just going to do it, with a E6850 (and may swap out for a better processor within a year, we'll see)

Barring the price, is it worth it, speedwise (I saw that the latest reviews are up as of yesterday for the new Micron based DDR3).

You need a Penryn V8!!

Uhhh, please do a search feature. We even have a MOCK post about this topic. IRC, No one needs a quad right now, unless:

1. you encode /photoshop / Compile like no tommarrow,
2. you play games which are quadcore optimised
3. You like to play with the latest technology.
4. You do distributing Computing such as F@H or WCG.

If 1 - 4 doesnt apply to you, you dont need a quad.

Well, how about for those of us who want to be prepared for quad core gaming? Don't you believe as we already have at least a couple titles (Supreme Commander and Lost Planet come to mind) using quad cores that the next 6 to 12 months will probably bring that option to all games?

Perhaps not, I suppose as they would have to be programmed from the ground up to utilize muliple cores efficiently.

Who doesn't?

The price for a Q6600 is down to $299 at NewEgg today. Still B3 stepping I'd bet. I wonder if it will actually go any lower than that next week? We've all seen the prices go up when there is high demand.

thats why number 2 is on the list. If you think your game will be quadcore optimized, then you fall in reason 2.

And you just reassured my reason number 3. But some people dont want the latest technology. And they prefer something mid stream, more then high end.

Hi,

I would appreciate to get some excellent feedbacks from this forum whether I should buy quad q6600 vs e6850/e6750. I am aware there is new price drop sometimes after July 22. I have checking pricewatch.com and others that price has started lower. I am also trying to determine what kind heatsink cooler I should for this cpu or use Intel retail heatsink cooler from the retail box.

I am trying to determine if quad will help me much than dual core. I am planning to build 2 different machines. I have been researching and learned that quad and duo core are showing very close performance on certain programs and applications.

First machine will handle 16 monitors with 2 PCI video cards which will hold 8 ports each PCI for Tradestation (stock market, forex, and futures quotes and charts, and custom program scripts) in Windows XP Pro x64

Second machine will be used to calculate math, probabilities statistic, programming Borland Delphi, Excel 2003 in Windows XP Pro X64.

My questions are whether will quad or duo core handle it more faster which one I should buy. I am avid and expert computer builder, programmer and debugger but I am trying to collect more feedback which cpu will suit my needs more efficiently. These machines are going to be used for business and work only but I wish I can use it for gaming but I do not have time for that only I have Playstation 2 and 3 console at my home when I am not really busy.

I am listing the specifications what I have already bought except cpu so I would love to get more suggestions from you that will help me to make right decisions which cpu version I should buy. I am very thrilled that Intel makes another price cut and it is more affordable right now.

Case: Antec Nine Hundred x 2
PSU: Ultra 600 watt x-connect v series first machine, 2nd machine Raidmax 630 watt
Motherboard: ASUS P5K LGA775 DDR2 1066 8 GB max, Core 2 Quad / Core2 Extreme / Core 2 Duo, 2 x pci-e x16, 3 x pci, ATX retail box
Memory: OCX DDR2 PC6400 2 GB with heat spreader each machine
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 or E6850 or E6750 (Unsure here too)
CPU-cooler: still searching for right kind or use Intel retail heatsink
System/applications: Windows XP pro X64, Tradestation, Borland Delphi, Excel 2003
Storage: Western Digital 320 GB SATA II
Graphics: Colorgraphic Xentera GT 8 PCI 256 MB x 2 (16 video ports totals for 16 monitors multiple) for first machine and 2nd machine undetermined maybe ATI Raedeon x1850 256 or 512 mb

uhhh.... your looking in the wrong area for something like that.

I recomend you go with a enterprise set on dual clovers. :T

i'm also considering between both.

what if i like to play games and multi-task at the same time. sometimes with online games, i tend to wait around abit while i switch between windows; browsing with multiple FF & IE windows, run applications, Adobe, uncompression, listen to music/video, chatting, word processing, email, torrents, and maybe a bit more.

in a situation like this, which would i benefit more? the dual, or quad-core?

with all those running in the background, when i switch over to back to gaming, will Windoze slow everything in the background n just work on the game?

If you want my honest opinion, id get a gigabyte P35-DQ6. Reason is because on that asus board, which i tried, if you have a G80 card, you end up blocking SATA 1, 3. Very poor location of these sata ports.

The P35-DQ6 also takes DDR2 ram, which will save you a bit, because DDR3 isnt mature yet. And its very pricey.

I would change the ram to crucial ballastix PC6400. It shoould do fine with that cpu combo.

Lastly, the PSU. I would pick up an Antec Quadro 850W. JohnnyGuru gave it excellent raitings for power. It should handle anything you throw at it.

I have to agree with that one... also why 2 x burners ?

Based on some other discussions in the Memory forum, I'll be switching to DDR2. The only reason I selected ASUS was prior familiarity with them, though I'm not a fanboy, I will go with someone else if need be. (Though that still leaves 4 SATA ports open on the ASUS, and in my design I have 3 filled; still, having only 1 left could be a problem if I expend or add other HD's for RAID or such in the future.)

And OOOOH: The Gigabyte has a Serial and Parallel port. That's great for me. I have some legacy apps that still require both, and it will be nice to have that on-board instead of having to get a card for it.

Same with the PSU. I've always been an Enermax guy, but if something else got really good ratings - OK, sounds good to me!

2 Burners: It's been convenient in the past when needing to copy a CD or DVD media. And they aren't exactly expensive. Though I had been thinking about an LG DVD/CD Reader for other reasons, maybe I will sub that in instead, both don't need to be burners in that sense.

Will the Ultra-120 cooler fit on the Gigabyte board properly?

i bit the bullet and ordered a Q66 from mwave for 284 shipped via 2-day.

i photoshop and rip dvd's and multitask like a mofo.

when i convert 200+ raw files at a time ill appreciate the four cores. watch my tv tuner at the same time and why not burn a dvd if i have to.

and it cant hurt for games down the road in the next year or two.
