Why don't any of you understand, we went through this with the single vs. dual core battle. Guess which choice was smarter?

At the time we had FX single cores up to 3GHz and duals only at 2.6GHz. I remember so many buying the single core because it offered better performance in games at the time, not you can't even play some games with a single core. This is the same decision as last time and the outcome will be the same too. Once Penryn takes over from the low to high end, Quad cores will be mainstream and Dual cores will move to the lower end and budget sector before '09. I'll bet on this if anyone wants to.

new supcom bench with Quadcore enabled again, e6850 beats the q6600 (even at Stock!)

At the same clock speed, the Q6600 would win.
yes, but how many q6600's will be within 500 mhz of the same speed of an e6850? Take the same mobo/cooling/etc and it will probably be at least the 600 mhz difference in stock speed, if not more. How many g0 q6600's will be within 400 mhz of my e6750 once I'm done with it? 5%? 10 % maybe?
Well, why done you wait and see what you get your 6850 up to, and what some people get their G0 Q6600's up to, then bench. Unless the software can't use all 4 cores, the Q6600 would have to win by a landslide.
good idea.

You guys have me thinking now. I have a opteron 165 running at 2.91ghz. Anyone upgrade from something similar to a newer intel cpu and want to report their findings?

Thanks But i was comparing stock, if you compare clocked cpus i bet the E6850 would still beat it. Ive seen many people online with the 6850 @ 3.9 and 4.0 ghz on air.

I think most q6600s are at a bout 3.2 on air.

Everything ran at stock speed. With that setup I could encode movies in DivX about half the time it took to watch the movie.

Something doesn't seem right. E6300 should crush 3.4ghz P4 DivX Encoding

Not to mention that CPU is only clocked at 1.86ghz vs. 3.4ghz for P4. E6300 can often overclock to 3.4ghz. Then it shouldn't even be close.
