Hello everyone,

I just picked up a Phenom II 925 for a killer deal. I want to build a new system soon, just wondering if the 925 @ 3.8-4.0 Ghz would be a big enough difference from a Q6600 @ 3.2Ghz.
I have 4Gb of Gskill DDR31600 to use aswell. trying to figure out which mobo to go with --Maybe 790FX or 890GX?? Should I wait awhile or go ahead and build this thing?? How much slower is the Phenom II clock for clock against a Q6600 Core Quad?

thanks

Doesn't seem like it's worth?? Might just keep the Q6600 and see if I can get some more speed out of it.

Yeah, I'd agree. If you can hit 3.6GHz with the Q6600, then I would just wait for the next generation CPUs in 2011.

Phenom II was launched to be competitive with the Core 2 Quad processors. So it would be a side-grade for you.

That sucks. I have a old 775 board--I don't think I can go much higher than 3.2 Ghz, but I am going to try.

P35 and P45 boards go for pretty cheap now used. You could pick one off the For Sale forum and see how it does. Would still be cheaper than going with a whole new Phenom II system. Clock for clock, your Core 2 Quad is faster anyway.

I've decided to just wait for the next gen Sandy Bridge/Buldozer. Nothing this gen is really worth getting an entire new mobo/ram/cpu to replace my Q6600. Hell, aren't Intel pushing Light Peak to be on new mobos by Q1 2011?

Exactly, I've been trying to tell that to all the AMD fanboys on here.

3.6 was never guaranteed on a q6600, I know I had 5 of them. If you got the frys board and 925 deal for 124AR and your 775 board doesnt allow you do anything over 3.2 then you would see some improvement from a 925 that does do 3.6-3.8. Do not expect however to see a 925 at 4.0 3.9 if your very lucky...

You could also sell you Q6600 that even on craigslist fetches enough back that your upgrade would end up costing as much as a decent p45 board.

I am far from a fanboi btw....

I'm a amd fanboy lol but i would stick with the Q6600 myself not much difference. If for extra gaming speed your looking for i would dump that video card and go with something faster.

The guy I purchased the 925 from said he had it at 4.0Ghz @ 1.45v so I hope he was honest. I think I am just gonna build another machine and sell it. I already have a Am2+ motherboard (Crappy 740 chipset),Case, DVDRW, and a ton of PCIE video cards. I can't justify buying another Mobo right now (P35-P45)--I bought my P965 for $35 and it still is going strong, shit I bought my Q6600 Go for $80.

Yup... save for an i7

My G0 Q6600 is still churning along happily, but it gets bitch-slapped by my new Q820M Core i7 powered Dell Precision laptop It's like 20% faster for x264 encoding.

Gonna sell the 925 and the current setup to go with a 890GX or FX and 1055T (Won't have to come out of pocket much, maybe $50.00 for the GX---Want to go AMD again-The Q6600 had a good run--Just want to sell it while it's still worth something.

I would only go to the 1055T if I had a Q6600. Even though the Q6600 has been around for a long time, there is nothing it cant do well. In multi-threaded applications it still soars well and it's fast enough for anything that is single or dual threaded with the 8MB of L2 cache.

Even then, at 3.2ghz it's not going to be a huge gain to a 1055T unless you are encoding videos ALL THE TIME. Remember Core2 Quads are still a bit faster clock for clock than the entire Phenom lineup. At 3.2ghz the Q6600 is probably comparable to a Phenom X4 @ 3.5-4ghz depending upon the application.
