Q6600 vs Q6700

So Intel cut the Q6700 by 50% and it puts the price now down close to the Q6600. So does this make the Q6700 a better buy than the Q6600. What are it's OC potential? Or do I get the cheaper Q6600?

I picked up 2 EVGA 8800GT 512mb this weekend at TigerDirect. $189.99 each with MIR $30 each.

I was waiting for the Intel drop to get my CPU and want to know whether I should go Q6600 or Q6700.

Also do I go with a mobo which does DDR3 vs DDR2. It's been over 2 yrs since I've upgraded. My current system is an AMD x2 4400, 2Gb, 7800GT 256mb (Just replaced with the 2 EVGA's), and the current mobo A8N-SLI Premium.

Plus, Intel or nvidia chipset? Is the nvidia chipset better since I'm SLI'ing to nvidia cards because Intel chipset is geared towards crossfire right?

Since you have 2 8800GTs, you HAVE to get an Nvidia chipset. Nothing else can do SLI, period.

DDR3 is overpriced with no real-world benefit over DDR2 at this point in time, for gaming at least.

I've heard good things about the MSI and EVGA 750i motherboards.

Modern Intel chipsets don't let you run SLI unless you hack the drivers or something. As for the original question, the Q6600 has a multi limit of 9, whilst the Q6700 has a max multi of 10, which normally would lead to higher overclocks. If the price is roughly the same, I'd say go for the Q6700.

What about the overclocking potential? I'm currious about that myself. Would it be worth it to get a 6700 or can the 6700 and the 6600 be overclocked about the same?

yeah, the only two cpus to consider would be a Q6600 or Q9450. Since you're going nvidia chipset I would stick with Q6600. You should get ~ 3.4-3.6 with good aftermarket air cooling. You won't get any higher oc out of a Q6700 than you would out of a Q6600.

And watch a Q6700 Spank it in terms of OCing.

Well, many P35/X38 boards can do 450FSB, some even more. A Q9300 @ 450FSB = 3.375GHz, which would put it slightly slower than a Q6600/Q6700 @ 3.6GHz, whilst consuming a sh!tload less power (since the Q9300 can probably do 3.4GHz at stock volts, whereas Kentsfields need ~1.4V on average to hit 3.6GHz). Hardly what I'd call a spanking.

If you add SSE4 video encoding performance into the mix, then its the Q9300 which does the spanking.

Also wanted to let you know...not totaly sure but usualy you can only turn in 1 rebate per product per household. So your best bet is to use a friend to turn in one rebate.

Are todays QUAD's to JUMP ON's or is better to wait NEHALEM and new socket?

P.S. Still using PIV 3.4-3.8 GH PRESCOT with HIS X1950PRO TURBO 512MB and 2GB PC3200 CORSAIR.

Depends on your budgets and your needs. What applications do you run? That system sounds like it would do most everyday tasks without effort, but new games (and of course video encoding) would appreciate new hardware, I'm sure. Your electrical company very well might appreciate your upgrading to Penryn from Prescott as well.

You should probably open your own thread for more detailed discussion of your possible upgrade plans.
