Q6600 vs. X3220

So it's that time for me to pull the trigger on a processor for a new computer. I was thinking of getting the X3220 from ClubIT at http://www.clubit.com/product_...il.cfm?itemno=A1938011 simply because it's a good price ($277 + $4.99 shipping) at a reputable vendor. Then, I saw a newspaper ad where Fry's was selling a motherboard combo and Q6600 for $268 http://shopping.dallasnews.com/ROP/ads.aspx?advid=2519. Assuming that it's possible to return the motherboard at a pro-rated price, do you guys think it would be better to grab the X3220 or the Q6600? As I understand it, the X3220 is basically a higher bin of the Q6600 so it should, technically, run a smidge cooler and perhaps overclock a little better. However, have people noticed a difference in the real world? Or should I just aim for whatever has the lower price?

I can tell you 2 things:

xeon chips are always better
overclocking is always a gamble

Easier to find Q6600 G0 than X3220 G0. Which matters ALOT more than whether or not it says Xeon on the box.

Speaking for my B3 X3210 vs my B3 Q6600's, the Xeon is horrible at OC'ing (2800) and it runs 10c hotter. On the same motherboard and same settings (S3 mobo) it runs 2800@81c vs 3200 @ 71c for the Q6600.

Thanks for the responses.

I imagine that the Xeon is supposed to be better than the normal Q6600. It's meant for servers and people have said it comes from a higher bin. My question, though, is whether people have seen a consistent increase for Xeon in their experiences. There haven't been any reviews on the X3220 itself. And, generally the Xeon costs more than the Q6600. Does the Xeon name justify a $5-10 increase. Though I imagine myself to overclock a little, I'm not too concerned about trying to break 3.2 Ghz or 3.6 Ghz.

Very true, but since it's free with the Q6600, it's a good deal. I wouldn't mind having a spare motherboard in the closet, even if it is an unoverclockable ECS.

I disagree

Disagree about the X3210 B3 stepping chip ? I see you have a Go X3220, and I am sure its good, I qualified my statement to my own hardware. I have 4 quads, and I do know what I am doing, and MY X3210 is horrible, that is fact, not opinion.

YMMV

BTW, I just got rid of my P5K, and now my other B3 is back to 3200 (from 3000) and stable so far. I sure love the P35 DQ6, its too bad you can only get the X38-DQ6 now, as they are $60 more than the P35 ! I absolutely love that board, NO vdroop !

Dont flip out mark

We are talking about G0s in here, you posted that you dont like your X3210... but its not G0 anyway.

B3 anything sucks pretty bad, i had one remember.

3.1ghz on the exact same rig in sig, and it dumped a lot more heat.

Well, my 2 other B3's (the Q6600's) one runs @ 3.2 and hasn't even burped in months on an S3 board @100% load. The other one WAS a problem, only 3150, then degraded on my P5k. Right now I am typing on it @3.3. Don;t know if its stable, but 3.2 was stable for at least 13 hours, so I thought I would go up some more. The new DQ6 is the reason !

So again, B3's aren't that bad, but I got a bad X3210.

It couldve just been a fluke, or you could got a very early pack date.

Either way they are almost always a better bin.

Youre part of the disclaimer apparently mark
