Q8200 + Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro = 50c idle?

So I tried re-seating the cooler and I cleaned and re-applied the thermal paste but temps are still around 50c-52c on all 4 cores.

under 100% load they only go to about 63c

I have an Antec 300 case with good airflow. my overclocked HD4830 idles at about 40c and only gets to around 56c under load.

anyone know what could be the problem here? I expected the Q8200 to be a cooler chip especially with a decent aftermarket cooler. I'm thinking of grabbing a corsair H50 since it's on sale at bestbuy for $59.

also cool n quiet is disabled in bios.

charbo187, welcome to the forums!

I have the same hardware as you. To be honest, I'm seriously thinking the temp gauges are broken in these chips. When I say that, I mean way off.

I have a Q8200 beneath an Arctic Freezer Pro 7
Gigabyte EP45-DS3L
Sapphire 4830 OCed
Antec P180 case (in my opinion is both one of the best looking and functional cases for cooling around)
Antec TruePower Trio 550w (Three 18a 12V rails)

I have reseated my HSF about 8 times now. I've used different Thermal pastes (AC Ceramique has been the best for me) and thoroughly cleaned the CPU and HSF contact point many times. Typically I get idles from 45C to 50C. My room in the house I'm at is pretty cold though. My third core is always 4-6C hotter than the rest. I'm absolutely sure I've got the HSF/Paste on perfect (read guides these times, even though I have a lot of experience) and I don't see how this is possible. I see others with their Q9550/Q9650's with way bigger and theoretically hotter CPUS always hanging around 30-36C with the same cooler.

I'm under the impression that it might just be the Idle sensors. Sure they go up from 45 to 55C when i'm putting it under load, but that's only a 10C swing. Most CPUs in the same class go up around 25C under load. Just keep it under 70C and you will be golden. They have a hard max at around 100C.

Edit: Turn on Speedstep. It only does good for your temps.

I bet one of your pins isn't fully engaged. The Freezer Pro has a very high pin tension. I had to take out my MB to get it to engage right on my nephews system.

I had that problem. I took the mobo out entirely to attach it every time after i discovered that. Only a couple C cooler, but not much.

The AC Freezer is great but requires some force to REALLY get it on...my guess is that it is not seated properly also. If you can grab one of the four post and pull on it a little bit it should not come up...my expectation (from experience) is that it might come off somewhere when you try this -- if it doens't then your seating isn't the problem.

you guys are right, the pins are absolutely impossible to get it in. I am going to get the Corsair H50, I will let everyone know how that effects my temps.

If you could, keep us up to date on your findings. I honestly think it's just the internal temp gauges are not calibrated or something quite similar. Most of these CPUs were meant to go to OEMs and small builds for people who don't pay attention to these things.

When I had the stock cooler on there (which is easy as pie to get on) the temps were outrageous. Most of the time it was as 55-65C at idle and at lod scared the shit out of me. That's the only reason why I purchased an aftermarket cooler.

so I got the H50 but now I am running into another problem lol. the H50 requires a 4 pin power connector for the fan and a 3 pin for the pump....I don't have any extra 3 pin connectors on my mobo. lol what can I do?

well guys, you can say I'm disappointed to say the least. just installed my brand new corsair H50. they sure made it look a lot simpler in their video. any way idle temps are about 2-3 degrees cooler at about 48c-49c. not really the improvement I had in mind. load temps top out at 56c so I guess that's a little better. Still obviously these readings are wrong or I have some kind of cooling issue not cooler related.

No doubt the sensors are off then. That cooler is better than just about any other air cooler out there. I dont think you will have any issues with those temps. as long as your arent doing heavy OCing it should be alright.

Idle temps are irrelevant, not to mention inaccurate. Load temps are what you want to be concerned with, and it sounds like your load temps are well under control with that H50.

I think you're right. I'm undergoing some OC experimentation. so far I'm at 2.7 GHz from 2.3 GHz. Cores sitting at 58c for cores 0 & 2 55c for cores 1 & 3. hoping I can sit on a steady 2.8 GHz, 1600 MHz FSB. I know you're thinkin that should be cake. but I bought a cheapo ASRock mobo and have never gotten it to boot past 420 MHz.
