I built my first system approx. 1 month ago, and after reading countless forums, I have noticed that my temps are higher than most, especially core #3. I have called Intel's tech support, and they said that they do not recognize ANY hardware monitoring programs EXCEPT what your bios reads. Which is only the cpu temp. They also said that I need not worry about core temps, only what the cpu temp is as a whole. My temps are as follows at idle.

IDLE:

100% LOADprime 95, small fft)

My room is normally at a temperature of around mid 70's right now. Hotter during the day. Here is a link to pic of my case and the arrows illustrate the airflow.

My heatsink is the Xigmatek HDT-S1283 , with a 120mm Scthye fan on it.

I ran prime95 for 16 hours straight and didn't have 1 failure. I would like to OC higher but at 3.6 I failed 2 tests. But then again it's the first time I have ever done anything like this. I have heard that quads sometimes have internal sensors that get suck, which if that's true how come of the four, I still see #3(the highest one) moving and not stuck on any 1 temp.? I have reseated my heasink 3 times, and cleaned it thoroughly each time. I am using the bolt on kit from Xigmatek, and I have it tightened down until it stops. I am just not sure what to do from here. Not worry about it? Everybody who see's these temps says JESUS that is High Temps. So it makes me worry especially being a noob at this. So I am calling all hands on this, that are willing to help me that is. I need some opinions. I would appreciate any help I can get. Thanks.

UPDATE on my high temp issue. So today I lightly lapped my xigmatek hdt-s1283 cooler. I made it pretty shiney, but not a mirror finish. I also applied artic cooling mx-2, and followed the directions for applying it, from benchmark reviews, which was recommended to me by Daniel who is a Xigmatek support tech. It only dropped my temp 1 degree. They are all still in the mid to high 30's, and the core with the high temp is around 60, at idle according to RealTemp 2.6. At this point I am tired of reseating that cooler, and I am just going to OC a little until I I hopefully get to 3.4-3.6, and let it ride. I am finacially stable, and if I fry it then i will just have to get another one. Thanks for everybody's help and recommendations on here. If anyone here finds out any more info on the Quads high temp issue, post it. I geuss there are alot of people on many different forums having the exact same issue. Thanks again.

Welcome to anandtech, Bryan. Those Xigmateks are hard to get seated correctly, because of applying the thermal transfer compound. Try reading this guide that explains the best way to apply thermal compound to an HDT* cooler.

I'm having the same problem with my Q6700 i am using the xigmatek s1283 also.

I also tried a scythe zipang but the results were pretty much the same...
Case is an Antec 1200 so definately no airflow issues...

I've tried orienting the cooler so the fan blows up towards the 200mm fan, that didn't make much of a difference either.

It would be a shame to have to clock this chip down because of temps.. It seems as if i can pick any number and the chip would boot up no problem... 10X multi is amazing.

Thanks for replying guys. I am using the backplate kit for the xigmatek, and I ran the screws down until they stopped, I did them in a criss cross pattern a little at a time, I also followed that benchmark review guide for applying the thermal paste to a t. But what is still kinda odd to me is that I had the same issue when using the stock intel cooler. The xigmatek really didn't drop my temps dramatically like all the reviews said. And I still had that 1 core that ran high. Who knows. Right now I am reading up on overclocking, so that I can learn how to do it. I am at 3.2 right now over stock, but that was simple I just upped the fsb to 1600. I know that there's ALOT more to do to get it higher, and stable. Well, thanks guys.

My temps are around 63-65C load when it's OC'd to 3.4GHz, and I have a Tuniq Tower. I've removed the heatsink and made sure to apply the thermal paste as close to the directions as possibly, and the temps are around the same. The computer is solid, and I've P95'd it for about the same as you. I've read that these chips can read high sometimes (or low too), and that you need to calibrate with RealTemp. 65C is still within a safe range, though, and I don't do many things that will have all 4 cores stressed, so I'm not worried.

I am running a Q9450 at 3.3 GHz on an ASUS P5Q Deluxe with a Zerotherm FZ120 cooler.
My temperatures fro most cores are in the 58-61 deg C range (which is much higher than I expected reading frostytech.com), but just a notch lower than yours.

ok, the first thing everybody needs to recognize here is that it's pointless to quote "temps". intel won't tell us what tjmax is, and the sensors actually measure the distance to tjmax. realtemp displays distance to tjmax, please post your temps in that format.

for example, my q9450 with a zalman cnps 9700 has dist to tjmax of 25 35 26 28. my ambient is 26c. the cpu is clocked at 3.264 b/c my room gets too hot with this one plus my x3350. speaking of the x3350, it has a tuniq with dist to tjmax of 31 37 38 40. I probably need to lap/reseat the zalman and at least reseat the tuniq b/c their temp range is too large across all four cores. however, I'm moving in 10 days so I'll worry about it after that.

@OP, you need to reseat your xigmatek again. that cooler is great but it's a pita to get seated properly. once you do you should meet/beat my tuniq's cooling power.

Thanks for the replies guys. I am gonna toy with it this weekend, and see if I can come up with anything. I will update as more comes to light.
