I just put a q9450 in a p5q pro and am trying to overclock it. i can't get it to boot at all. i have the cpu voltage set as high as 1.375 and the fsb set to 400 to give me 3.2Ghz which seems completely reasonable to me. the ram is 1066 mhz g skill set to 2.1v. why won't it boot like this?

Did you change the northbridge or MCH voltage?

Did you step the FSB gradually or did you just jump from stock to 400?

Are you running an appropriate divider?

Are you running the latest BIOS?

latest bios and drivers. i have moved it gradually and the best oc i can get is 2.8 from a 2.66 GHz proc. it's the fsb that won't oc because it won't boot at a FSB of 400 with a multiplier of 6. i've only oc'd on gigabyte mobos before and there are some settings on this asus one that i am not familiar with. can anyone tell me what the FSB strap is?

heres my settings

CPU Ratio Settings
FSB Strap to North Bridge
DRAM Frequency
DRAM Timing Control
DRAM Static Read Control
DRAM Read Training
Mem OC Charger
Ai Clock Twister
Ai Transaction Booster

Voltages:
CPU Voltage
CPU GTL Reference <------------What is this?
CPU PLL Voltage <-------------What is this?
FSB Termination Voltage
DRAM Voltage
NB Voltage
SB Voltage
PCIE Sata Voltage

The pc wont boot at 6x400 so it must be the fsb that wont oc. what settings should i use to try and get it there. all i want is 8x400 for 3.2 GHz. on my gigabyte mobo my e6420 is running at 3.4 and it was absolutely no problem getting it there.

Under the AI Tweaker, you should try changing the the FSB Termination Voltage and NB Voltage. I definintely wouldn't go too far into the "Yellow" numbers. Also set the PCIE Frequency to 100.

so i think i fried the board. i had it stable at 3GHz and i was gonna call it a night so i went into the bios and set everything back to stock. then i saved and exited. now it won't post at all. there's a little flash of life for a split second in the psu when i hit the power button but nothing after that. i tested different ram and another cpu and psu on the mobo with no joy.

Shouldn't he set the pcie to 101? I was under the impression that if you leave it on 100 it will be raised when you overclocked.

Reset CMOS? I doubt you fried anything at those voltages.

Try your NB @ 1.4 and your FSB TERM around 1.3

Also, on my ASUS board, there are a couple of needless settings that make it harder to OC...for the life of me I cant think of what it is.....crap.

Edit: Its that transaction booster..make sure it is disabled.

I have about the same rig

p5q pro / q9450 c1 @ 3680.5 *460fsb / asus hd4850 / gskill pc1000 8G's using air thermaltake 120 extreme

Everything is on auto except cpu v = 1.2675 & pcie = 100
every thing else is left on default settings virtualization / c1e ...... etc

prime stable / hits about 70c after 8hrs
latest bios v1104
i've hit 4ghz all stock with e8400 on same board and crucial 1066 ballistix

i wouldn't mess with other voltages just yet, stick to cpu voltages and try different ram

the new bios was a big help could only hit 3.4 just last week with much more voltage 1.3
