I am not a hard-core techie, but can get a new quad core for free and hoping I can drop it into my current ~6 month old system (HP Pavilion a6177c) without a lot of difficulty. HP does not officially support the 45nm parts on this board, but the FSB speed is matched... is there anything else that I need to worry about? Any thoughts on whether it will (or will not) work?

HP tech support said that it will probably work but no guarantees. I'm looking for some second opinions here.

Here are the specs for the motherboard:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfr...dlc=en&product=3462614

Here is the current and proposed CPU comparison:
http://compare.intel.com/pcc/s...milyID=1&culture=en-US

Thanks!

Completely dependent on BIOS support. I'm running an ICH9 board (now sorta dead... as of this morning - IP35-e) with a xeon 45nm quad (q9300 equiv.) and it worked fine once aBit had a bios for it. So as long as there is bios support it should work. Either way I'd give it a shot. There is only a small chance (if any) of hurting the cpu trying it.

take the new quad, before you isntall it, make sure the bios is up to date which will inherently tell you if you can use that cpu but if not, you are still left with a great cpu for free

Thanks for the input. I should have mentioned that HP support advised against the BIOS update as he said "would not have any effect on different CPU's" and would be somewhat risky in terms of killing my current system. That first part struck me as a little suspicious... hence my post here.

Seems like the safest route might be:
1. Install new quad and try it out
2. If 1 is no good, try BIOS update and then reinstall

Thanks again!

It works! Drivers were automatically installed on first boot-up and after re-booting everything works fine. I installed speedfan 4.34 to monitor CPU temp (and make sure I didn't botch the install)... and all cores are running <45C under load.

That's great news! I have been trying to find out if the Q9xxx Core 2 Quads would work with the IPIBL-LA motherboard and have been checking this page out on a regular basis. HP support has not been very helpful. I currently have an e6550 installed.

I have a few questions for you - Can you clarify what you meant when you said "drivers were installed" (what drivers)? Also anything additional to watch out for - like Windows WGA authentication issues? Did you install the BIOS update that is available on the HP site? Which version of Windows are you running?

Any additional info that you can provide on the upgrade and your experience would be much appreciated. Asus doesn't support this OEM board and HP hasn't exactly been forthcoming either. Thanks!

- The driver update was just like what happens when you connect a new printer or other device and Windows updates the drivers automatically... with a re-boot required.
- No problems so far.
- I didn't do the BIOS update. HP tech support said it wouldn't matter for CPU swap and risk of collateral damage is high if you don't do it right.
- Running Vista Home Premium SP1. (95% sure I did the SP1 update before the CPU swap)

Overall this was a simple plug and play swap. I wouldn't have taken the risk w/o explicit support from HP or Asus, but the quad was free and worth a shot at that price. My advice is to go for it. Good luck.

Very interesting, I was searching for information similar to this (though I'm looking at swapping my Q6600 for an E8500 on the IPIBL-LA).

I did the BIOS upgrade to 5.13 this morning...though there were no real release notes so I didn't know if it would support anything other than the specified Q6xx0, E6x00, or E4x00 processors even after the upgrade.

Have you noticed any performance issues since the upgrade? Is the CPU running at full clock speed?

Anyone else out there have any experience with the IPIBL-LA and an E8x00 CPU in general?

Seems to be running fine and at intended clock speeds. It does seem to be a little slower booting up, although I never timed it... and I suspect that might be due to the Vista SP1 upgrade since I have noticed some file associations, etc. also don't work anymore.

I recently put an E8400 on my HP with this board. Everything seems to work, except now it won't come out of sleep mode...have to hold power button untill it shuts off. Also, media center no longer works. Any ideas would be appreciated!

BIOS version/date: American Megatrends Inc. 5.03, 6/1/2007
SMBIOS version: 2.5

Following up on Onlyl American's comment - I think I have the same issue coming out of sleep/hibernate but usually power down so it's not an issue. The only other noticeable issue is with auto-play for downloading pics with Windows Live photo gallery doesn't work anymore; I have been opening the program manually and selecting "import" instead. I don't use my desktop all that much so there may be some other issues I haven't seen.

Welcome to the forums.

I searched HP's site for downloads for your machine and found that there are a number of variants on the model that look like they differ by country of original sale. Examples: Pavilion a6120.be, .ch, .cs, etc.

If you know your exact model number, go to HP's site, enter it in the search window on their home page, and look for the download page for drivers, etc. You'll also have to choose the page for your OS.

Good luck.

hello

thanks for your reply Harvey. mine is actually a6120.za
still i have already downloaded the latest BIOS rev 5.13 from their site and it is not detecting the Intel Q9400 processor.

from what i have researched on the net, it appears that HP has recoded the earlier 5.13 because it was allowing you to install a higher cpu than they wanted! hence the new version of bios 5.13 does not allot anything past the specified.

if anyone is able to get a Q9xxx or E8xxx CPU working please provide the proper BIOS.

appreciate your help a lot

cheers

I know I'm bumping an old thread but if anyone still needs help here's how it's done:

Thanks to Jorona at bios-mods.com

I have Force Flashed an IPIBL-LA mobo with a IPIBL-LB Bios. It works swimmingly with a Core 2 Quad Q8200 (45nm, 2.33ghz, 1333fsb) and a Pentium Dual Core E5300 (45nm, 2.6ghz, 800fsb) both of which didn't work before the flash.

I am including a guide on how to do it.

You need a CPU that lets the standard bios boot (65nm), a USB Flash Drive, and all the files I'm going to link too.

1.) Download http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software11/COL34762/pv-86212-1/sp46442.exe

This is the file that contains the IPIBL-LB Bios. Use WinRAR to pull "BEN5.43" out of this archive

2.) Download http://rapidshare.com/files/112382685/SP27608.zip

This is a utility That will allow you to make a bootable USB flashdrive that is good for flashing.

3.) Download http://rapidshare.com/files/112382778/bootme.zip

These are the files required to make a bootable USB drive with the utility above.

4.) Download http://cid-988b91f35a949678.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Public/AFUDOS229ES.zip
This is an ES Version of AMI Flash. this will alow us to force flash the other bios.

5.) Use the HP utility to create a bootable flash drive. The "bootme.zip" has all the files required to make a bootable flash drive.

6.) Unzip "AFUDOS.EXE" from the archive onto the Flash drive.

7.) Move the "BEN5.43" file to the flash drive.

8.) Take the flash drive and insert it into your IPIBL-LA Motherboard.

9.) Boot the system with the compatable CPU and hit "ESC" to get to the boot list. Select your Flash drive.

10.) Once you get to a command prompt in DOS type "afudos /i"BEN5.43" /pbnc /n" The system will begin flashing the new BIOS. Once complete it should tell you to reboot.

TADA! You now have a 45nm compatable IPIBL-LA MoBo! The Network chipset on the two boards is different. So you'll need a PCI network card. 5 dollar NIC, or 100+ dollar replacement mobo. You be the judge.

A truly infinite post!

I have updated the bios and now I have an IPIBL-LB.
Thanks.
The problem of the network interface remains.

I
didn't understand what "after you set the mac address manually"
means.

Hardware level or software level?

I'll
explain.

Do I have to change the bios or similar, or just change the mac address of windows?
In any case, just a random mac address, or does the mac addess have to respect some parameters? For example, is it an INTEL card?
Thanks
