How much diffence would I see between this Q9550 and my conroe E6300 OC'd to 2.8Ghz?
Man, I wish I had a Tax Id. Adding in 6% and the hour drive plus turnpike toll a show stopper for me
I would check and make sure that your motherboard can support a 45nm quad. If it can, then yes, it would be a great upgrade for you.
What about going from a B3 Q6600 @ 2.4? How easy are these to overclock to 3.5?
Not sure if this is against forum rules or not.. if so just LMK and I'll delete the post. But if anyone wants one slightly used retail Q9550 shoot me a PM. I'm selling the one in my siggy that I purchased at MC just a few months ago. It's an E0 stepping and I've been running it at 3.65Ghz stock vcore on my MSI P45 Platinum (which is also going up for sale) on air with a Thermalright SI-128 SE . I paid $179.99 for it and I'd like to get $180 Shipped for it.

Reason for selling. I was in Fry's last weekend and got an EVGA P55 SLI MOBO on clearance for under $90. Last one they had and I do not believe it was an advertised sale. Tripped over to MC and got a I7-860 for $229.99+tax and am using some DDR3 I've had for some time.
Is the Q9550 still onsale at micro center? I looked on their site and it doesnt show anything. I realize its an in store deal...
Just wanted to say that I bit on this last year around Thanksgiving when it was 179 at MC and 230+ everywhere else. I went from a not overclocked Q6600 to a not overclocked Q9550 and the difference was phenomenal. I kept the same 8GB ram, HD, GPU, etc.
It feels like a new machines again- with a SSD that is on the way I added at least another 2 years to my 775 system. It is finally as fast as I always hoped a computer could be.
So if you are like me- you are heavily invested in a 775 system that you like- and your MB can actually use the Q9550, then go get one. You won't regret it.
Two quick notes for responses I expect to have:
1. I didn't overclock either CPU because my case (which I love aesthetically) has poor airflow. In fact the Q9550 allowed me to use a smaller cooler which improved air flow!
2. I didn't want to go to a Core system because I hackintosh, and currently in hackintoshland NOTHING beats certain 775 Gigabyte boards flashed with Mac friendly bios:
