Good move! I love the C2Qs, they're still quite capable, but being the top dog for the still widely used S775 socket, they go for an unfortunate premium.
A new Pentium Dual Core + B75 mobo is faster for most things for example, and costs about the same or less than a QX9650. An i3 is faster I think in absolutely everything actually, and your new 2600K will simply blow the QX9650 to smithereens, even at max OC vs. Stock 2600K. Not to mention the vast improvements on H61/P67/Z68 Chipsets in terms of USB/SATA/PCIe performance.
You did the right thing! Bonus is that if you still have viable S775 parts, you can sell them for enough cash at least to buy a tank of gas or so, if not a bit more. I'd get a $2 fan to replace the one that died first though.
