Quad Core....Go for Penryn or wait for Nehalem?

What are you opinions? I like my AMD comp, but I want to build a Quad Core system. Penryn looks exciting, but Nehalem looks ground breaking.

Also, do you think Nehalem in 08 or 09? I know everything is speculation.

i say wait. 10-20% over c2d isnt groundbreaking at all. my next upgrade wont be till next gen platform or till quad becomes mainstream.

Depends on how long you want to wait really... AMD will soon *apparently* be releasing their K10 barcelona which they claim is 40-50% quicker per clock than kentsfield, I am holding out on a Quad core till we see Barcelona and Agena Benchmarks.

Nehalem will probably be the build AFTER my next build.

Personally, I'm waiting for Penryn/Barcelona and doing a build towards the end of the year or early 2008. Kentsfield/Conroe isn't a big enough jump from a highly OC'ed K8 rig to justify a full platform upgrade, but Penryn should have enough extra OC'ing headroom due to the process shrink that it might be a better deal. Hopefully, 4GB DDR2 kits will have come down significantly by then and be available at higher speeds.

Nehalem appears to be an absolute beast on paper. If all goes well I'm getting a Nehalem in 2009.

Penryn will be an even nicer bump in performance, but Nehalem will be a new beast altogether!

my next bump will be an 8-way
