Sorry, I'm not saying 4x GPUs is "sour" but its pointless. It gives programmers that idea that they can make games for people with multiple GPUs, which hurts eveyone who can only afford 1 GPU (and everyone who is sane).

Multi GPU setups are one of the worst things to ever happen I think...it just lets programmers get sloppy with their coding...much like the current attitude of "memory is cheap".

Time and effort could be better spent on creating better single cards (multi-core or otherwise) . . . 4xSLI while it sounds and likely looks cool is hella inefficient . . . "waste of energy" would be an understatement . . .

No.
I don't think programmers are going to be coding for dual or quad systems.
They'll be goding for Geforce FX level cards by now if we're LUCKY, maybe Geforce 4.

Most people don't have even ONE high end graphics cards. Games developers aren't so stupid as to ignore this and make games for FOUR high end graphics cards.

Even though they still manage to code sloppily.

Thats why games like COD2 are built for SLI?

It's impressive but it looks like overkill, IMO. High res + 4*AA seems quite enough. I certainly can't see any spectacular benefits from 32*AA... Think about the noise, power draw, heat... The G71 in SLI will be plenty for games like F.E.A.R. in high settings (i.e. 1600*1200, 4*AA, 16*AF). Going above these settings simply doesn't yield a visible improvement of image quality, but to each his own, I guess... Not really progressive thinking, eh?

Well they made the PC P&C 1000W PSU for something right?

Seriously though, it would be smarter I think for nvidia to implement 16x AA for single cards (i.e. G80) rather than do 4x8AA Quad SLI . . .

You can already use two kinds of 16xAA on single cards. The performance hit is massive and they only work in some resolutions, but they are suitable for old games.

They used the term "Pimped out" in the ad, I don't think they're going after educated consumers, just rich ones.
"Hey Daddy, I want a powerful computer."
"I don't know computers, what do you need?"
"I don't know, but Dell has a Super Ultra Deluxe computer. It's expensive so it must be good"
"Works for me!"

If you have the money, then ytf not?

Do you need 600 FPS? No, all you need is a constant 60. Yes this rig is powerful and all, but it's massive overkill. And it uses how much? 1 kW/h?

I don't think customers for computers like this are concerned about their electric bills.

I don't think consumers who aren't considering this are in a position to cast stones about "wasting energy" as they likely have cheaper, more energy ineffient appliances like older furnaces, less insulated homes, older refridgerators, and CRT tvs.

Beyond all that, the "SUVs are bad, mmkay" argument is pretty lame.

Probably would be noisy. But if you have the coin to buy this thing, I think implementing a water cooling solution for the CPU and all GPU's wouldn't be too far of a stretch. That would most likely be the way I would go if I had this kind of scratch.

Dell, the world?s largest maker of personal computers, and Nvidia Corp., a leading designer of graphics processing units, on Thursday demonstrated the world?s first personal computer (PC) for gamers that features four graphics processors thanks to Quad Scalable Link Interface (SLI) technology. In addition to the ultra-fast graphics sub-system, the forthcoming Dell XPS 600 Renegade will use overclocked Intel dual-core chip.

?Today?s demonstration of the new Dell XPS 600 Renegade with our Quad SLI technology takes gaming to new levels,? said Dan Vivoli, executive vice president of marketing at NVIDIA.

The Dell XPS 600 Renegade will be equipped with Intel Pentium Extreme Edition dual-core processor 955 (3.46GHz) overclocked to 4.26GHz, 2GB of PC2-5400 (667MHz) memory, specially designed graphics cards each carrying two NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GTX graphics processors with 512MB of memory per chip (2GB in total), Western Digital Raptor hard disk drives and so on.

Dell XPS 600 Renegade PC will be a limited edition computer featuring state-of-the-art components and offering breakthrough performance both overall and in graphics-demanding applications. According to Nvidia, the new Quad SLI technology will allow users to run even the latest and most-demanding games in resolution of up to 2560x1600 at comfortable frame-rates as well as enable 32x full-scene antialiasing.

?The ability to run today's hottest titles in extreme HD resolutions with all the eye candy turned on is absolutely amazing. Strap yourself in, because you are in for the ride of your life,? Mr. Vivoli added.

The Dell XPS 600 Renegade will be available this spring at undisclosed price.

Rumours about 4-way SLI graphics solutions have been floating around for some time now, for instance, recently it was said that Nvidia was aiming to allow such a capability in its ForceWare Release 90 drivers scheduled to arrive in early 2006.

While the cost of 4-way multi-GPU solution is unlikely to be lower than $1800 - $2000 or more only for graphics sub-system, provided that the drivers work fine, end users who agree to pay that amount of money are likely to get unbelievable performance. Even ATI Technologies, who first doubted about the success of multi-GPU technologies in the desktop space, recently said that 4-way multi-GPU was possible on the enthusiast market. Furthermore, technology may become very interesting for professionals seeking for the highest performance possible.

As part of this technology demonstration, the Dell XPS 600 Renegade Quad SLI PC will be on display in the Dell booth and Nvidia booth at Consumer Electronics Show 2006, January 5-8th, at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

4 7800GTs anyone?

I think it's just exciting! Weren't we ALL dying and reminescing about the Voodoo2 days? It seems like only yesterday that we wondered what 32X AA would look like on a WQXGA 30in LCD. Well, it's all REAL now, enjoy it.

Sure makes me happy to think of what's coming in the next 6 months.
