Quadcore prices stagnating?

I remember buying my Q9450 a year half ago for about $220. Today I saw NewEgg's ad, and Q9550 is on sale for $220. You'd think that prices would've dropped much more over that much time. Looking back to see how fast Q6600 and the bunch dropped from their old 300, 400 prices, down to $200 level. It looks like Intel has effectively stopped the drastic pricing slide they had with C2Q. I'm sure Intel's laughing all the way to the bank though.

Lack of competition does that. I will likely buy an AMD because of it next time around, support the other side.

Well architectures haven't really changed since the introduction of Conroe.

Maybe with another large jump in IPC will see current processors drop in price like the Opty 165s have?

I hope we see competition from Nvidia also.

However, my belief is that expensive RAM and Operating Systems hurt the sales potential of value CPUs and mainboards.

At a certain point prices on cpu's will plateau, especially when they are no longer producing replacements that will fit in the same socket. If intel made some new processors that pushed down the socket 775 quads in terms of performance, then you would see a price drop, but since all new cpu's will be using the new sockets the prices on the 775 compatible's will remain where they are(heck they might even increase).

AMD continues to give better performance for less money, and both the Athlon II X4 and Phenom II X4 lines give a much better price/performance ratio than C2Q. C2Q probably stopped dropping in price because socket 775 is dead and they want as much money out of upgraders as they can get.

for $159 at newegg? really? I look in hot deals on several forums and go to newegg everyday and have never seen it for that price.
I second that. I have never seen them close to that at newegg.

Yep, Newegg has never had them for that price, as far as I've ever known. It would have popped up on a deal site if they had.

the 159.99 for a q9550 was Microcenter B&M back in May. I cursed the sky because of it.

I waited for months and finally gave up waiting and grabbed an OEM Q9650 for $249. That's the best price I ever found on anything close to that, and about the same as a retail Q9550.
I think the high-end 775s aren't getting any cheaper for a while.

It hasn't arrived yet, but their feedback on reseller ratings seemed decent enough. They gave me a UPS tracking number the day I bought it and it's now showing in UPS's system, so they are probably legit.
I'll know more when I have it in my grubby little hands.
All Q9650s are guaranteed E0 stepping, so I figured the risk was small.

30 day warranty? yikes. lol. I would be to nervous to risk that but thanks for the link. its odd that they have such a huge discount for the oem version of the Q9650 yet they dont even take off anything for the oem Q9550.

You can always RMA directly to Intel, so the 30-days thing doesn't bother me. If it's DOA then 30 days is long enough. That's how I saw it anyways.
I think they just got a good deal on the 9650 OEM tray from some larger vendor.

Isn't it all about competition? Doesn't Intel own the high end, so until AMD offers a serious high-end Quad, not a $99 pretend Quad, then prices will not move much.

I think the AII x4 is actually competing with intel dual cores.

I bit on the i7 920 D0 at @$200 at Microcenter four months ago. Been very happy with my new rig ever since. Well, I was with my 4400+ X2, but now I'm 4x as happy .
