I am trying to Build a Workstation for 3D Rendering , The extent of work would include 3DS MAX , MaYa , Adobe Premier Pro and After effects cs5 - I need opinion choosing between Quadro or High End GTX card.
I would be doing Loads of rendering and 3d Modelling , texturing Lightning and all that.

CPU : i7 3930K
Mobo : ASUS P9X79 Pro
Ram : CMZ16GX3M4X1600C9
PSU : Corsair AX850
HSF : Corsair H100
Case: Corsair Obsidian Series 650D
HDD :Intel 320 Series GEN3 160GB 2.5IN SSD SATA2 + WD 1.5TB Black

GPU : Quadro 5000 or GTX 580 (no point getting 590 as SLI is not supported by adobe suit)

I need serious performance , I have been using other alternatives like cpu rendering on render farm and cuda hack on gtx 460 / 560 but This machine or even something better is needed.

Yes but the GPU architecture is almost same , with huge difference in price and customized drivers ... ! I need to understand the reason why quadro is superior ( price/performance ) thn any latest GTX card.
I understand GTX being customized for gaming , quadro for workstation and tesla for gpu computing , said so if we ignore the tremendous markups , should i still choose an expensive quadro?

any gpu comparison or test results for rendering ?

hmm , I have not only looked at nVdia ' website but many other websites ,

If we talk about premier pro the following link has some benchmarks
http://ppbm5.com/MPE Charts.php
looking at this GTX 580 performs better ,

now 3Ds MAX and Maya . Well I know Maya is very CPU intensive application and
GTX 560 should be fine .

Again , I cant find any substantial benchmarks or user reviews ( most of them out there say quadro is more marketing and not perf/price with the drivers tweaked to use cuda cores in an efficient way with less heat )

"Would I get more performance / price form GTX 580"

The advantage of a Quadro card is mainly that it is much faster at dealing with geometry: hardware clipping planes, hardware anti-aliased lines, faster triangle throughput etc.

This stuff is very useful in everything CAD related, especially when dealing with wire frames.

I believe anything needing opengl is going to see better performance with a quadro card. Also anything where you need to drive multiple viewports will be better...

That being said....My computer spent a buttload getting me a 4000 model to run huge Revit files. We are talking several gigs once I link all of the different structural an architectural models as well as my piping models. Problem is my GTX 470 at homes seems to be just as fast. In this case I htink it may have to do with Revits use of Direct3D and not opengl....

There is no difference really. There is just a 'bit' in the BIOS/driver that says "user paid $6000 for this card, enable this feature" or "user paid $200 for this card, cripple these features".

At least that's how I remember it, back in the days you could simply flash a Quadro BIOS into a $200 card, and when they tried to stop it by making hardware changes you just changed some resistors under the GPU. It's entirely possible that with today's GPUs there are real physical differences in the actual GPUs now that justify the disparity. :whiste:
