Quake 4 and Doom 3... sigh

Why do they even bother making Quake 4? Why not just create a skins pack for Doom 3 and call it Quake 4? Oh wait, that's what they did.

I must say I agee 100%. I've only played for about 15 minutes, but I'm already thinking I won't ever finish this game.
I only played Doom3 for about 2 hrs total before I quit, and this feels almost exactly like the same damn game.

Oh well, just leaves me more time for Fear.

I miss the days when the PC "enthusiast" arena was filled with gamers and hardware tweakers.

The past few years it's been all about playing only the "best" games and complaining about everything else, and buying the "best" hardware and trying to "tweak" it when it already delivers fully playable frame rates at 1600x1200 and above in most games with AA and AF enabled. Then wrap it up by jamming it into a pre-modded $300 aluminum case with neon lights in the windows and custom grills on the fans and call it a day.

It's no wonder PC game sales are down. If I didn't know any better, after reading over these forums I would think John Carmack was a brain dead hack, id software never had any business in the PC market and needs to go away (taking the dreadful Doom and Quake series with them), BF, UT2k4, WoW, and FarCry are simply the only games worth owning, and Steam is a pox on the world as a whole.

Doom 3, by any standard, was not a bad shooter. They never announced that it would be recognized for a revolutionary storyline or gameplay or anything. It just tried to bring back the origional gameplay of Doom which, in a general sense, did. Too many people are just pissed off cause they bought into the Doom 3 hype and was let down for when they realized Doom 3 just provided what it said it would provide. :roll:

I liked both Quake 4 and Doom3!There, I said it. I absolutely loved when that giant beast leaped on the elevator and tried to bring me down. It looked amazing. I don't understand people who are playing these games and calling them snore fests. What are you playing that is so friggen exciting. Because believe me, unless it was an Xbox exclusive, I've probably played it.

This is the part where I note that although I liked both these games, they are both fundamentally wrong.

If I were going to make a fundamental throwback to the Quake series it would have at the very minimum, bouncy grenades, bunny hopping, rocket jumping, quad, pent, and fast movement. The weapons would be blatantly unbalanced with the lightning gun, rocket launcher and grenade launchers being significantly more powerful and very fast. If I couldn't handle those things, I simply wouldn't make it.

If I were going to make a fundamental throwback to the Doom series it would have, chaingunners, cyberdemons, brain spiders, pain elementals, invisible bulls, maze-like levels, and traps that spawn at least 15 monsters in certain areas (unique traps). I would also make enemy damage not hurt the hero that much and the hero able to kill monsters pretty fast. The difficulty would come from the sheer number of monsters attacking the hero at any given time.

So yea, I think there is still a place in gaming for a sequel to both doom and quake. And I don't think those spots have been filled yet. But I did enjoy these latest attempts.

I wouldn't say he's a brain dead hack... the doom3 engine is damn impressive if you ask me - and he's the force behind it. I'm not saying doom3 was the greatest elsewhere, but give the man some credit for making a good engine!

D3 is a crap game . . . it failed to live up to ANY standard [even if you nevert heard the *hype*] and is the product of a now-brain dead Carmack [who should ONLY stick to game engines] . . . and it is owned completely by the Serious Sam series
