Quake 4 is 'everything' Doom3 should have been

i had to post . . . Q4 is solidly Bargain Bin [$15 at BB w/2 free Cokes thru today] . . . and i HAD to pick it us as an alternative to Oblivion and B&W2

[i can "feel' the changes inside as i am lured to the RPG/RTS sides]

Anyway, Q4 is a 'fun' game . . . meets the strict definition of "linear" but without appearing so . . . like a movie.

Runs great on an x850xt . . . plays good . . . and even a little not so annoying 'team AI' [better than HL2's Alyx] . . .
. . . a few hours into it and i like it . . . i am still a FPS player.

and frankly i 'jumped' more than in D3 [which after a short while annoyed the hell outta me] . . . and this is my first of the 'Quake' series . . . i never could get into the first 3.

I fully agree with you and also just got it a couple of weeks ago. I went looking for the dvd edition when it first came out and only found the cd version so I passed on it, and not really expecting much from the game anyway it kind of just slipped my mind. Two weeks ago I saw it at Wal-Mart for $cheap$ and figured what the heck, how bad could it be? I was kind of indifferent to Doom 3, but Quake 4 is great fun.

Nothing really "special" or noteworthy about it, just a plain, old fashion, straight forward shoot 'em up but it's just flat out fun to play. I bring this up because lately a lot of games have some kind of "hook" that sounds neat and is somewhat novel the first time you play through, but quickly becomes either irrelevant or even tedious after a while. Prey for instance with the gravity walk, spirit walk and the death walk stuff. The first little bit it's something new and different but it doesn't really add anything to the enjoyment of the game overall. FEAR is another with the super slow motion stuff, neat at first but then you realize it pretty much makes you invincible if you have a pulse and are even halfway competent with a mouse.

exactly, YBS1 . . . what we expected from D3

and what Serious Sam had for the first two parts . . . FUN

i.e. twitch shooting and superb gfx with AI that stays OUT of the way . . . and a good flashlight.

btw, MaxPayne brought 'bullet time' AND a good revenge story. . . . it's been 'awhile' since we have seen "innovation" in a FPS ['Riddick'] . . .and that's WHY i have been exploring other types of games.

Still, NOTHING beats giving multiple enemies a good fragging with great weapons.

and part of the reason for this post was a 'head's up' on the price . . . it's been over $20 for a long time - especially if you count shipping.

BB 'hot deal' $15 Q4 with the two free cokes expires today . . .

EDIT: Thought i'd mention that i had to EXCHANGE it because of a bad install disk {"error reading fron Disk"} . . . i see others mentioned this problem . . . Disk 2 i think . . . but it doesn't show up till the end of the install. . . . fortunately, BB is close to my work and there was NO line . . . so, bad luck . . . good luck

Well, i HATED D3 . . . coulddn't 'get into' ANY Quake that preceeded it . . . so i really took a 'chance' . . .

I agree completely. No more monsters in the closets, occasional team mates along side you, decent atmostphere, and decent enough story.

Glad you're liking it. It's an excellent game and even on the medium skill level, it's quite a challenge in the last half of the game. BTW; the last level of the game can be really frustrating unless you're smart (smarter than me, at least) or you cheat and look things up. I'm guilty.

I love the weapon selection and as you've already mentioned, a REAL WORKING flashlight is such a nice change.

I hope they come out with a nice expansion/mission pack for it.

It runs nice on mid-level hardware, even at 12x10.

the only thing that frustrated me with Q4 was when you got *just* close enough to win, but you KNEW the game had to go on, so of course (whatever) doesn't work the way the story has it planned.

I love Doom 3 so when Quake 4 came out I checked that out. I played it for a little while when uninstalled it... it felt like a mod for Doom 3, nothing new.

i can't imagine comparing D3 wtih Q4. . . . that is the purpose of this thread . . . to contrast them. D3 was banal - at best.

And, the Single Player of the BF series is lacking. . . .

I never considered getting Quake 4 until seeing people rave about it in forums. All I remember from reviews when it came out was that it was rehashed and dull. Now that it's $20 at Futureshop, guess I should check it out. That and pick up Brothers in Arms Earned in Blood (Road to Hill 30 was great).

Damn you bargain gamers. I said when Quake4 came out that it was everything Doom 3 had been, with bosses, better lighting, and a cooler atmosphere. That was ages ago. The only pitfall in the game was the outdoor levels, they don't feel outdoorsy, they shouldn't have even tried. The games great, I wish I gave the MP more of a chance but there is simply too much else to play. If you do get it, keep an eye out for Q4TF and all the other crazy mods coming out.

q4 felt like the same game I've played for the last 10 years but with different graphics....I think I played for about 1.5 hours before I uninstalled it

i guess i am over half-way . . . for it's 'type', Q4 is a solid game. . . . the Strogg Medical facilities were pretty gruesome and continued the 'story' pretty well . . . the enemies are varied and have good 'attack' AI . . . and the weapon are very good - a nice 'balance'.
. . . i think there is a better 'movie' in Q4

D3 engine is excellent . . . with some weaknesses in outdoor levels . . . and the vehicles are OK . . . even if i felt like ditching the Walker a few times . . . .

I agree completely. I really enjoyed Q4. I had read some less than stellar reviews (a lot on this forum), so I was fairly shocked at how enjoyable the game was. Doom 3 was lame with all the monsters that just popped out of random wall panels. I also hated all the PDA crap in Doom 3, really seemed to ruin the flow of the game.
