Here just took some screenshots on my widescreen VA1912wb. THe resolution is at 1440x900 and 16x AS 8x AA with image settings to Ultra from the game settings and 'High Quality' from the nvidia control panel. I wish I could test this on a 512mb video card.

PS - I used an fov of 105, i think its the ideal fov with sufficient view room and a faster pace.

You can change it using g_fov in the console. I noticed under the default 90 fov, the game is too claustrophobic.

These are some of the specific areas where the game fps goes down drastically. But generally the overall fps is around 45 with these settings.

It's a great fov for multplayer, since everything is so fast, I personally like it and alot of pro quakers do too. Anything over 100 atleast, at 90 the game is super slow and looks too closed together.

I don't think you can modify the fov in multiplayer because it would give some players an advantage.

For quake 4 multiplayer, every command works except any cheats. And yes this does give a player some advantage. You can try it yourslef

my dream is to have a rig that runs this game with these settings on a 24 inch 1920x1200 widescreen .

can you really play Quake 4 at those settings on that card?
I doubt whether anything less than a 7900GTX or 7950GX 2 can handle that.

Like I said, it generally ran fine with around 35-45 fps with 8xAA 16xAS filtering. It'll run at around a smoother 60(capped) with 2xAA and 4xAS. It's not just the video card however, the processor also comes to play. A 512 mb 7800gtx could probably give some more fps on those settings, but I'd have to test it.

The widescreen command does change the fov, and I find it hard to believe that Quake's default FOV is in the 60s... lol. You can even run i tat 1600x1200 and turn on the widescreen option, then stretch the image to fill your 1920x1200 screen and it looks almost exactly the same as the 1920x1200 output, without the extra drop in performance.

I think you mean to say the default fov is 90, not 60. Its always been 90, since q3 too .

Right, which means that 105 isn't much of a step up, and since I gain more FOV by using a widescreen option.. what exactly are you doing? The built in widescreen works fine in Q4, and there is definitely a wider angle than the default, while still keeping the intended image the same.

Edit: Not that you'd be playing multiplayer with the FSAA on, lol, so I guess my point is a bit moot.

Well I don't really use the 105 fov to 'see more', it rather gives me better map control and more speed, I can strafe more easily and also hit targets faster with agility. With a higher fov, you basically feel as if you move faster, which is a great thing for gaming. Try it yourself in mutliplayer and see the difference.

And just for the point of 'seeing more', this is widescreen mode with the default fov 90

And this is with a 105 fov
