Quake 4, what Doom 3 should have been

Wow I'm not done but I had to make a post about this game. The SP is great, gamespot definitely made the ratings too low. The Doom3 graphics engine makes all the interiors INCREDIBLE. And the game play is so much more interesting then what Doom3 had with the cheesy scares and what not. I'll edit this post when I'm done but heres a short list I made of things I like/dislike about this game:

PROs:
-Interior graphics, ambience
-Smart teammates that actually kill things
-Really cool flashlight effects
-Level design is amazing
-Variation in gameplay (vehicles etc)
-Relatively linear game play that doesn't force me to run around in circles finding a key

CONs:
-Weak storyline. Actually not much of a storyline to speak of other than you're in a war. I guess that's more realistic
-Only the machine gun and pistol has flashlights. I'm tempted to look for another flashlight mod for this. Its rather annoying to be forced to use the machiengun all the time because thats the only one with a flashlight
-Odd pickup placement. While the idea of having teh badguys dissapear was interesting, it kind of forced them to put pickups at interesting places. I always wondered why there would be a SMC ammo crate deep inside a Strogg facility, somewhere thats so heavily guarded entire squads can't get in.
-Bad guys more or less the same. They shoot ******, you kill them. Thats basically the jist of all the enemies minus the bosses. It would be interesting to add some different enemies like the cyberninjas in FEAR.
-If I could command the marines. Sometimes it gets annoying when my guys rush way ahead of me straight into strogg forces while im in teh back trying to pick them off.
-Gamespot already mentioned this but the outdoor scenes dont feel real because you're always flanked on both sides by walls. So you never feel like you're outdoors like in FarCry. A limitation of the engine I guess.

I totally agree with you about Q4 being what D3 should have been, however, I thought the storyline was excellent and the single player mode was superb

I finished it two night ago and now I'm playing it agina to take in the scenery

Doom 3 > Quake 4

at least doom 3 offered some suspense/excitement...quake 4 was an exercise in boredom

Q4 is doom 3 done better, i wouldnt go say that its done right as there is still much to fix IMO. I thought the story was more enjoyable especially after playing Q2 like 3 months before. However the MP in quake pwns dooms by like infinity!

The difficulty settings in quake 4 are all out of whack. They should've been called more like easy, medium, hard, very hard, extremely hard. I'm playing on the second hardest setting and it's hard as hell. I wish i started with the middle setting, but i'm too far into the game to start over.

Quake 4 > Doom 3

Concur

After about 1/3 of Doom 3, I went on God mode. To much repetition. But Quake 4, now that's a game on par with Half Life 2.

Doom3 also gets my vote over Quake4. Quake4 had nothing to motivate you to continue, it was a chore to finish. Quake4 had it's moments though. Although the gameplay would seem better. Everything else took a hit, except for graphics.

I agree, infact to me Q4 was better...but thats me now I gotta play COD2 & FEAR, right after I build my new system!

Installed and played Quake 4 for the first time today. After 10 minutes, I'm not sure I want to play anymore. I finished the 1st section and it's just kind of boring. It looks nice but I don't find the gameplay to be anything great.

I'd take Doom III over Quake 4 anyday. Quake 4 runs worse on my system, isn't as engrossing, and doesn't really offer much new. It seems like a single player mod for Doom III.

So far I've gotten a little past where you get busted out of the Strogg medical center, but I'm done with the game.

I just have to laugh at all the people who use cheats and mods to help them see on Doom 3 and then claim it was boring.

Of course it is going to be boring if you can't die. Of course it is going to be boring if you can see the bad guys 100% of the time. If they wanted it to be a bright game, then they would have made it a bright game. Basic psychology guys. What you cannot see WILL scare you. That is the point behind Doom 3.

For one thing, crank up the difficulty. The game will not feel repetitive if you are constantly fighting for your life in a survial horror environment.(What the game was meant to be) Expect it to be dark. It is a dark and scary game, it is not Half Life 2. Do not play the game with the mindset that it sucks. Many people receive an unchangable opinion that the game sucks from people who were afraid to play it. AI is NOT the game's strongpoint. Do not go into it expecting that. When was the last time that brain eating zombies and demons from hell knew how to make strategy to flank their enemy?

I for one played the game when it first came out at the maximum difficulty setting available. I found it to be quite enjoyable and way different from the likes of FarCry and UT2004.

Having played both, you will enjoy whichever you end up with, but neither is that much better than the other. If you do end up playing both you'd likely come to the same conclusion although, description wise, FEAR sounds very enticing.

1. 90% of the game you shouldn't need a flashlight. Especially after playing FEAR. The environments are relatively bright in comparison. Also, didn't the shotgun have a flashlight?
2. The odd placement of items can be at least semi-justified in this game. The marines fire soldiers deep into enemy lines via pods that are similar to escape pods on space ships. You must have remembered the awesome scene where you go through like 90 walls first hand. This explains supply drops in random deep areas of the base.
3. I'd argue the sentinel enemies in Q4 were more unique than the cyberninjas in FEAR. Hopefully you know what I mean by sentinels, I don't want to spoil anything for anyone else. Although, if you were to compare Q4 and FEAR to say, metroid prime, yea both games could really use way more enemy variation.

Your last to points are spot on and I agree with them. Although I didn't feel the need to send commands to my troops much, it could have been useful to some folks.

as of right now, COD2 with all it's strange quirks is more fun than Quake4.

Quake 4 was given to me for my BDay. So far I'm having fun, but it's killing my 9800 Pro. Graphics of the models are superb and gameplay is good, but the game is quite averagish overall. Textures are ok(might be the settings I'm forced to play at, but UT2k4s textures seem about the same if not better), vehicles are below average(UT2k4s vehicles are far better), and weapons seem pretty good.

Worthy of Purchase, but it has no chance in Hell of being GOTY IMO.

It killed my 9800 too. The engine does awesome at indoor environments though and the weapons. The textures, outside of interactive screens, is probably it's lowest point and honestly I don't remember anything about the vehicles.

Get a screenshot of the blue mist area when you get there. Thats the best area in the game. It's got glass doors that open diagnolly upwards. I meant to take screenshots of it but was hitting printscreen instead of F12.

Many different opinions. I haven't played Q4 yet, but am thinking of buying it. Weird though how PC gamer gave it 70%.
