I was excited when they announced it, then they made some updates that casualized the game.

Who thought making auto strafe/hop a feature by making it so you just hold down the space bar a good idea, or let users pick a load out for which they spawn with. Negates the whole point of holding an area or fighting for the weapons.

With so many other superior options for shooters, this is one of the biggest reasons that I don't bother playing QL anymore.

Look at how god awful UT99 looks today and you'll see how well Quake 3 has aged.

I played a lot of Quake Live for a couple years and had a hell of a lot of fun, just got burned out so I haven't played it lately. It's certainly refreshing compared to most everything else on the market. Most shooters I've tried these days, player skill takes a back seat to perks, vehicles, load outs, and horrid net code, making them nothing but frustrating. Unlike a lot of these games, death doesn't come off as arbitrary or inevitable in Quake, it just motivates you to get better.

:Edit: As for the update, it does muck up DM to a rather large degree, but CA is untouched AFAIK.

pretty much spot on.

the new loadouts work well in the new TDM/freezetag mishmash, the new CA rules kinda suck but it's still CA, FFA is completely ruined, but nobody decent plays it anyway.

quake is a game that is so hard, 15 years will not be enough to master it.

i wouldn't say that skill takes a back seat in modern games, its just that modern games actually pay off for thinking, planning, and teamwork.
in quake, its all just aim and reflexes.

everyone who likes FPS shoudl try quake (its still very playable today, unlike UT99 or even UT2004), but in the same time they should not fixate on it. some modern games *are* better than quake.

finally, one word about steam; quake is a game that works only because of the quality of the community and the rules they have evolved of fairplay and focus on skill.

new steam players dont care about these rules. they join even teams unbalancing them, they join top tier games sucking horribly and wo't leave unless kicked, they scream (well, type obscenities) when challenged about them being in the wrong server because thats what CoD community people do.

steam hasn't "ruined" quake, because quake was a small elitist community, but it hasnt helped either. its just a passing nuisance that will leave the quake playerbase no richer than it already was.

The looks are outdated, but you play a game like that for the quality of its game play and fun factor. I still play a little UT99 every now and then with a group that gets together on a server to play regular weapons Capture-the-Flag every Friday and Saturday nights. It's still a blast.

A new UT is under development, btw, and it's going to be FREE. Not free-to-play, just free!

So play on a server with Classic mode enabled.

rofl!! Superior in what ways?? No skill to play...takes skills to play quakelive!!

I have found all other FPS to be way too easy. Bordering on needing no skills to play!

this has been out for years, what is the big deal with it coming to steam?

It'll be a big deal in the short term. Steam is the world's most popular distribution for video games, it should see a surge of players right now.

So if anyone wants to get (back) in to the mini-revival of Quake Live, this would be an opportune time.

so basically millions of people who use steam have never heard of quake live?

painkiller had the auto bunny hop feature. that's one of the cool things about quake. there's certain movement skills you should learn that gives you an advantage.

lets see.

in quake - CA - you can have a max of 300hp. the Lg shoots at 6hp/50ms.

in BLR you can top out at 250 (completely unrealistic, generally you would be around 180) and the AK shoots at 50hp/90ms.

there is recoil to contend with, spread, CS-like halfstep, stamina, and you can't camp.
sniper headshots are 1hk(most bodyshots are also, 1hk). the enemy team will always try to gang up on you; you have objectives; there's mines, rocket launchers and airstrikes trying to kill you. if you stand still, you die. most weapons have infinite range.

i'm sorry if you tried blacklight and you sucked, but thats your fault, not the game's.

hahahaha yeah right...

you shouldnt have problems playing EU servers with more than 100ms ping .. try me 1v1. ill play with stock gear, you can have all the cheese stuff. If you get a better KDR than 1:10 i'll reconsider.

BLR is no where near the same game-style as Quake Live, period. There's a lot of gimmicky stuff to any game that has loadouts, period.

I'll be honest - Quake Live (and pretty much ANY arena game) is based off of item pick-ups. Watch some of the really good QL tournaments and you'll see they follow the same paths, they know the internal timing of the item pick ups and where all the teleports go. It's no different in 1v1 or DM, that's how good players control the map.

The ultimate twitch or "skill" game play is insta-gib, period. No recoil, no spread, no items; just pure, unaltered skill.

yeah, it's a shame they added loadouts. but atleast its restricted to the lower tier weapons. you still have to find the lightning gun etc...

All the footage I've seen of the patch shows the load outs allowing lightning gun, rail gun, rocket launcher, or the newly added heavy machine gun as primary weapons.
