Those are so niche use-cases that cpu designed for desktop and mobile should use 128 bit vector SIMD. Wider vectors in x86 is just heritage from reusing server-oriented cpu cores on desktop. Intel didn't go all the way to 128bit vector hardware with Lion Cove yet - but it's obvious direction on next generations - drop too wide to be efficient vector hardware from desktop and mobile cpu designs.
So people give you examples of applications outside of HPC and you dismiss them because that doesn't fit your narrative that wide vectors are for HPC. Game engines, specialized or not, using AVX2 are surely niche 😅

512-bit is likely too much and not a good balance, I agree, but 256-bit might be the sweet spot. I'm unsure to be honest, contrary to you.

And what do you mean by Intel didn't go all the way to 128-bit? Is that a typo?

128 bit vectors are useful. 256 bit not so much. Doing twice as wide 256bit vector SIMD will benefit single digits for performance at those desktop workloads that benefit at all from wide vectors. Doubling 128 bit resources will bring much bigger performance benefit - to much more general use cases. Intel E-cores are there already - they doubled 128 SIMD execution with resulting better IPC in some workloads than Raptor Lake. Doing same for high clock big cores is a bit difficult - widening fp load ports is much easier than adding them - but design aim to best possible IPC for desktop loads it a must go road.

And AVX2 is mostly used in it's 128-bit format in desktop workloads - 128 bit vectors are useful for example 3d-games but it's really hard to find use cases for 256-bit vectors.

So no, I don't except wider SIMD for desktop oriented ARM designs - they will implement more general use 128 bit SIMD execution instead. Route that x86 vendors need to go too if they want to stay in competition.

single rear camera!?

If they do that it clearly isn't pointing to the future of iPhone design like the X was.

If they went that way it would end up being yet another "4th" iPhone. They've tried a "plus" that's big but not Pro, they've tried a "mini" that's smaller, and both have had lackluster sales. So maybe this (which I'd bet would be branded as "lite" as the weight would be what gets people to buy it not the thinness) will do the trick - though I'm highly skeptical of that the rumors that claim it will be the most expensive iPhone are correct. People might be willing to pay a little more for a lighter phone, but not more than any other model!

This was entertaining.

[SnazzyLabs] Mac Fanboy Tries ARM Windows Laptops

It was and it showed me why I stick to MacBooks as my portable computer. Windows is baaaaaaaad on laptops. Of course if your work or apps require a windows laptop then I am stuck. Like my work Dell laptop, it frigging sucks.

Why is windows bad on laptops?
Now that battery life is good?
For John Smith?

Well, actually, search is pretty bad. The rest I don't care about.

Two ways you can fix it:
  • Disable automated web search and web result display in the Start Menu. You'll have to uhm.. search the web for the necessary steps
  • Alternatively use Microsoft Power Toys which is a collection of neat utilities made by MS employees who actually know what they're doing, one of these utilities can be used to search and run files

It's very simple:

And you can say buy buy to garbage in Windows' search.

You can see that Strix MT efficiency is on par with X Elite. Although the testing methodology is questionable...

How does X-Elite comp with Strix now that both have released. it would be good to comp them for performance and efficiency. Then with Lunar in few months time.

https://www.costco.com/asus-vivobook-s-copilot+-pc--15.6"-oled-2880-x-1620-laptop---qualcomm-snapdragon-x-elite-12-core-processor---windows-11.product.4000280037.html should be optimal as that is also Asus and comes with 32GB of RAM at $400 less than AMD counterpart.

The Justjosh Youtube channel had X-Elite in their comparison, though it's the one without the ST boost (doesn't effect MT from what I've seen). Not sure on the battery capacity differences.

X Elite does pretty well. It's just sad that most are without single core boost. GPU too, but other than that it's pretty good. Strix results seem to be all over the place and I'm not sure if they made the correct decisions. Maybe it would have been better off with 8 full zen5 cores.

In any case, things will heat up next year. I don't think zen6 is going to be anything special. Next gen X Elite though...

I wonder if Qualcomm has had second thoughts about releasing the X1E-78-100.

Back then, I was rather disturbed by the fact that they chose to release a chip without Core Boost at all.
Next gen X Elite though...
No hype trains please!
