There were some new documents posted in the Qualcomm vs ARM lawsuit (the countersuit from Qualcomm against ARM). Lots of interesting details in this new submission from Qualcomm.

In particular, Qualcomm stated that a potential customer (a "AI and Ecosystem Company") that relies on a "competitor's chip" for "substantial processing needs" was about to agree to have a "custom chip" designed based on the "Qualcomm's custom-built CPU". But the company has now refused to "finalize a termsheet" after the Breach Letter was published (the Bloomberg leak from November).

Qualcomm specificaly asks for damages from the business opportunity with the "AI and Ecosystem Company" in its lists of remedies. So, it should be a somewhat substantial customer and opportunity for Qualcomm.

Any guesses what this "custom chip" would be and who the "AI and Ecosystem Company" is?

Likely Google's new Tensor for '25 or '26. Amon alluded to out-licensing the design at one point in an interview I can't find, and some Chinese rumors indicated that clocks were around 5 Ghz, far out of line for an ARM TLA design...

5 ghz?

Sounds like a lot even for Oryon or M4.

5GHz if it's in the Laptop chips sounds possible. For instance, we don't know how high would Oryon V2 clock in a Laptop chip, possibly around 4.6GHz or so, the next chips could clock 5GHz with certain design tweaks + N3P + maybe some good binning. Of course, maybe then an IPC increase is out of the question or very small or requires a considerable amount more of transitors.

With the way they’re pushing frequency on the 8 Elite, I’d expect 4.6GHz in the 8 Elite Gen 2.
Pertaining to laptops, I’d expect any future products to be released in the fall with Oryon V3. So they can align the X and 8 Elite SKUs. And the X Elite probably would be near 5GHz.

“We want to be able to have a portfolio that can go into every price point with a Copilot+ PC,” Amon said outside Qualcomm’s booth on the CES showroom floor in Las Vegas. “We're not stopping here. We're just starting with [that] portfolio of products.”

In particular, Amon said, Qualcomm is looking to expand into the high-performance PC graphics market, something that would put the company into direct competition with heavyweight Nvidia (NVDA).

Qualcomm has a few job postings from December that hint at a Datacenter CPU Server.

Server High Performance Compute Microarchitecture Lead

Qualcomm Data Center team is developing High performance, Energy efficient server solution for data center applications.
...
Our focus is on developing server-class high performance CPU solutions that are highly optimized for the needs of the server product.

There are about 5-6 similar job positions related to server posted in the first two weeks of December.

And 8s Elite leaks are surfacing...
https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/01/12/qualcomm-snapdragon-8s-elite-details-leaked/

It is supposed to have X4 and A720 cores and will reach 2 million.

The issue? The frequency will be high, which might indicate problems in the thermal department, in which Mediatek has in control.

Also is rumoured to have scores similar to SD 8 Gen 3.
So expecting this CPU config

1 X4 - @ 3.3 Ghz
5 A720 - @ 2.9 Ghz
2 A520 - @ 2 Ghz

The issue? extremely possible that won't defeat Mediatek in the multicore department and is extremely likely that the score comes from the GPU
Also battery life might be hurt because of the high frequencies...

And... new info about the Snapdragon 8s Elite.... they should renamed into 8 Gen 4..

Interesting, not as far as expecting. It has 2 small cores, it would be on trouble since Mediatek will have 2 more Big cores.

Single core wise it wins due the X core, but multi core wise gets stomped in 15% by the Mediatek offering.

If somehow Mediatek deliver an upgrade for the Dimensity 7400 going to the SD 8 Gen 1 performance without the overheating issues (is pretty possible to pull it), Qualcomm will be on real problems since their best cheap offering, the SD 7s Gen 3 goes on par with SD 870.

Sailesh Kottapalli? Apparently he was involved with Itanium back in the day and has been at Intel through a lot of good and (recently) bad Xeon generations.

Nah, I get THAT. Bragging rights. Sure. Always has been like that.

Ok, got updated now, and Qualcomm does not have a noticeable lead in ST compared to 9400, so yeah, no point.
I was under the impression that 8 Elite has a bigger lead in ST.

Or die shrinks on logic allow for higher clocks and they’re already running about a 4 cycle L1 latency anyway, and can hit 4.5GHz on gaming phone chips with Oryon V2. Apple is doing 4.4GHz on M chips with a wider bigger design and I doubt that frequency is a fundamental limitation as opposed to the highest possible bin for every M chip so they don’t have to frequency bin (which they generally do not, aside from one time with the A15 in iPad Minis).

They also wouldn’t run it at 5GHz in a phone anyway with V2 even if it “can” because they don’t have power headroom. What Oryon V2 just shows us is with N3 and their design (probably layout changes too physically) they can hit the 4.3GHz at baseline in laptops for V3.

Anyway I don’t believe rumors like:

They are not going to get 5GHz at an acceptable power envelope with N3E or N3P unless the core is just shrunken to a fault and drops IPC. Even more SLC etc won’t fix this - it was different going from Oryon V1 which was obviously lacking to V2, but this is just bull.

Now, 5GHz in laptops? Yes, sure. The mass market phone part with V2 is matching the 4.2GHz X Elite’s peak at half the power, so they’ll have room on yields and power to push it most likely with V3.

But, I am skeptical on The standard 8 Elite 2 will be running a 4000+ GB6 with half of that coming from a boost to 5GHz, at least around a similar 7-8.5W range.

I do think it will hit ~ 3600-4000 range (low bound guess: 3600 at the ~ 7-8W point where the 8 Elite currently does 3200 around that power. Upper insane bound: 4200) on the standard part around that same wattage (7-9W) but mostly via IPC gains (node gain and possible SLC extension as well lowers power but still)
