Quality Control

Hi, I'm new here, but I've got a comment to make... is it just me or has quality control for recent computers gone down the drain? A couple of years ago, I bought a recommended Pentium II 400 with an Asus P2B mobo, and a Maxtor hard drive. The thing never crashed, the hard drive works perfectly, and it did everything I wanted it to. Recently, I built an AMD Athlon, the "best buy", and within 6 months, my IBM Deskstar 75GXP has failed with bad blocks, my Thunderbird has faulty L2 cache, the SB Live crackles and pops, and the thing crashes all the time, WITH Win2k.

Sigh, I'm willing to sacrifice some speed if I could have a stable platform again. 440BX, you are sorely missed.

well, we're probably producing 10x the amount of drives and equipment as before so even with the increase, a few return here and there is probably still below their threshold for bad quality...

Bad luck I guess. Mine runs fine, AMD + VIA systems tend to be a little more difficult to configure, but when it's done right, they rock.

The Athlon is a perfectly stable platform, no need to sacrifice anything, just get latest drivers for your hardware, flash to latest bios and enjoy

I read somewhere that the IBM DEskstar 60gxp was designed to replace the 75gxp due to stability problems...? Maybe your Deskstar 75gxp is under warranty and you can exchange it for a 60gxp? (the 60gxp is also slightly faster, I think) Also, what kinda chipset does your board have? Via southbridges sometimes have problems with SB Live!'s. Perhaps some other forum members can help you out with the sound card crackling problem if you have a Via chipset.

Infected-total bad luck. When I contacted AMD about the faulty T-Bird, they said I probably had defective cache. I can't run my Athlon 1000-B stable at 1Ghz/100 bus; Windows runs fine, but Prime95/3DMark/Counter-Strike fail. The best I can do is 933Mhz/133 bus. Has anyone else experienced this kind of problem?

A lot of people around here also seem to have problems with the IBM 75gxp, so I will probably end up RMAing it. As for my ViaKT133a, I'm reinstalling Win2k w/o ACPI... just my point, I never had these probs with my Pentium II, just a matter of luck i suppose...
