i need a new set for the house given we only have like one good knife. Any recommendations? i have no clue about this stuff.

I prefer Wusthof-Trident. Henckel makes some quality knives too - you should try them out at a store to see what you like better. I'd avoid Kyocera - they're good for chopping if that's all you do, but too brittle for general use.
If you've never had a high quality forged blade, try a decent pressed blade first It might do everything you want it to, and you would be able to save a lot of money.
