Quality of retail HSF

Hello all,

Just a quick question as to the quality of the HSF that comes with the retail version of an Athlon tbird 1.33. I am not really interested in overclocking the proccessor, only taking it out of the box and plugging it into the motherboard and ensuring it works.

Down the line... I might get a little antsy and try it. Is it safe to do any overclcoking with the retail HSF.. if only just a little?

The AMD retail HSF is a nice quality unit. The only downside is that it is difficult to take it off. As long as you've got good case air circulation, I think it would be fine for small overclocks. If you are going to need to do the "pencil trick" and take the hsf off and on multiple times until you get it right, this is not the unit for you! The clip is very strong, and you have to press like a mofo to get it off!

i would strongly oppose it. You probably get in the 50's with the retail heatsink and and higher would not be recommended. Hell, even 50 is too high for a lot of people.

Doesn't that depend on the motherboard, and even on the bios?

Know anything about how a retail fan would perform on an ECS K765A?

Here you can find HSF comparison with real CPU core temperatures.

The CPU can be as high as 88 degree C under full load with a "standard" heatsink. Note that the review showed CPU temperatures which is higher than the socket well temperature most MB measures.

Cooler master althou not a good HSF but a decent one. You can expect O/Cing for another 50-150...200 maybe on this HSF. Of course, watch ur temp. Ppl living in the cold country w/ case temp if 25-30 could get 200 Mhz extra w/ f/load CPU temp around 50-53C.
