This might get a more enthusiastic (and not locked) response in the Hardware forum... Just a friendly suggestion. The ones after mine might not be so kind, people tend to be pretty harsh in this forum!

What kind of media are you using? If you're using generics, make sure you try some high quality media before discounting the quality of the drive.

this is a known flaw of the drive, it cannot write at 16x UNTILL it gets to the outer tracks making i think about the first 50%? of the cd written at 12x, and the rest at 16, yamaha knows it, and they will admit it, the drive just isnt worth it, there may be a firmware update at a later time to fix it, dont know, most likely a hardware limitation. so its not a problem with your system, it is the drive itself i would recommend returning it and getting something else for the time being, just an opinion

<edit> ok its not techincaly a flaw but if they are going to sell it as a 16x it should be able to write an entire cd at 16x, not half 16 half 12, as far as i know its not noted anywhere on the box, you didnt buy a 12x or 10x so you could write half a cd at that speed did you? so why should it be done for a 16x </edit>

This isn't a drive "flaw." The drive writes at a "maximum 16x," just like the TDK. Both drives take awhile to achieve that speed, so the average speed is less.

Check out CDRInfo.com for a comprehensive review of the Yamaha, TDK and Plextor 16x drives.

Quality of a drive should be discussed in the hardware forum. Don't you think they have different forums for a purpose? Besides, as Blakwngbrd stated, you will get much better advise in the other forum.

You should know better than to post this in hot deals! There is a Hardware forum specifically for things like this.. I'm not flaming you I'm just requesting that you think before you post next time and can people stop asking the mod to not delete their threads!! It makes it obvious from the start that it doesn't belong in the hot deals forum..

The SpunkMonkey's gotta agree with Phunky. You're not protecting anyone else who bought the drive. This is a hardware issue and is no way related to a hot deal. That's why there are different forums. Them moderators'll eat you up. But you didn't hear that from me.
