Quality paint brands, what do you like?

The most recent consumer reports rated Behr and Valspar highest but many reports/reviews I find online like Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams. We're having our interior painted and the painters will use any brand we like but all recommended Sherwin Williams.

We don't want to waste money on the paint but don't want a cheap or poor quality paint. I was looking for something in the $25-$40/gallon range.

I have been a residential and commercial painter for 20+ years. I was also the sales rep for NY state for one of the largest coatings distributors in the world for 7 years. I have had long standing relationships with all major coating companies, either working for them or woth them, for a very long time. So I have intimate knowledge of just about all aspects of all coatings from all companies available...

Having said that, every company has their bad, good, better, and best. Its not as much the company as it is the companies products in a specific price point. However I will try and break down my findings as a rule of thumb.

Sherwin williams: wide pricepoints for all catagories. I like their commercial grade best.

PPG: solod mid-line at good price point.

Benjamin Moore: best high end but pricy.

Behr: solid product but a bit too pricy for what I consider a mid grade product.

Interior rooms. House was build in 2000, we had most of the rooms painted back in 2005 and haven't had anything repainted since. We've been getting quotes over the past few weeks and now it's time to choose a brand so we can start picking colors. We're using all the same color for the main floor since it's all pretty open.

Covering black is going to be a chore. Since we will need no priming, I would go with something that has a high solids count to ensure proper coverage. SW has a good mid line in the Pro Mar 400/200 that will probablly be your best bet regarding price/performance. (200 being the better of the 2). However if you can get Behr premium at a comparable price, I would probablly go with that. If you plan to redo your ceilings as well, nothing better than SW Master hide.

I think you misread the line about painting back in 2005 as painting "black".

My Grandfather was a Professional Painter/Artist for decades before he passed away.

He used to do a lot of murals in places, he pretty much swore buy Kiltz for a Primer or even a base paint for mixing colors, and Sherwin-Williams for general use as general use/sealer over the primer.

We used Behr Marquee on our home and we are really liking the way it looks. It is a little bit pricey but I think overall we are very happy with the way it applied and the results

I was leaning toward Behr because of the consumer reports article but I've also found reviews and recommendations for other brands as well. I suppose as long as we get something that's higher grade we should be fine. Last paint that was used was Sherwin Williams and it's lasted well for 11 years.

I've had good luck with sherwin williams looking good for a long time. I've tried Behr and Valspar and they don't seem to hold up as well. Although it's been probably at least 5 or 6 years since I last used either of those so I'm sure there have been some improvements.

A quick note about SW - they run 40% off sales fairly frequently (every other month or so?). Been pretty happy with their paints so we usually end up doing any needed painting shortly after one of those sales

Yep, one of the painters we talked to mentioned that but they also seem to give contractors 40% off as a normal thing. If it's not on sale we'll just wait.

Yup, just bought 8 gallons of their super paint recently because of this sale. Haven't started painting yet, but soon.

I typically go Benjamin Moore myself and like it. I don't really paint a lot to really be able to compare it to anything though. I just figure for the cost and amount of time I have to buy paint it's worth paying a bit more knowing it's considered a higher end brand. That and there is a shop not far from my house anyway.

We got samples of both Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams. We have both stores close by. We're most likely going with SW because our contractor gets the biggest discount there. Now we need to pick from the multiple interior latex lines of paint they have.

we used the hgtv line in our rental, cheaper and just as good as the other lines. I think we used harmony in our house. proclassic is great for trim/cabinets/etc.

Just as a follow up, we ended up going with Sherwin Williams and used Harmony for the walls and trim. Came out very well and covered nicely.
