Yep, as a matter of fact, ZDNet.com has (or used to have) an article on how to hack a Tivo by adding a larger hard drive. I saw it one of their shows about a year ago.

I'd give you a link but I had trouble accessing ZD's site. Just go there and do a search for Tivo, or even Replay TV hack.

Well, if it's anything like the 30gb AS 7200 uata 100 that I bought from buy.com last week, i wouldn't hold my breath. i plugged it in, started a fdisk, and it hung half way through. next thing i know (this is 5 min after i got the drive out of the box mind you) after i rebooted, i get a 'secondary master hard disk fail'. it wasnt the controller, tried it elsewhere...fried hd. lovely.

maybe this was just a freak occurence, i'm hoping it was. if they credit my account from the RMA, i should be able to get an inadvertant hot deal too, since i bought the drive for $128.95, plus the $22.95 kingston ram, minus the 30 coupon...total $127 shipped. sold the ram to a friend for 30, got the drive for 97. but now the rebates. -30 for the first reciept, and -30 for the second when i buy it again with my buy.com credit. nice, eh? 30 gigs for $37. i will have to wait for the drive to be shipped back to them and then for their shipping back to me, but still... just hope this next one works better than the last.

Warning on Quantum rebates. I called them twice at (800)624-5545 about a rebate I sent in last year Sept. They told me, "We experienced an overwhelming response to the rebate offer" and "are delaying the rebate." I wouldn't expect the rebate for a while even though they claim 8 weeks. :Q

When the MIRs take forever to get the cash. My quantum MIR is the stalest rebate outstanding on my Excel sheet that tracks rebate statis, bar none.

Although the Maxtor seems to be the preferred drive for replay hacks, there is no reason that this drive would not be suitable for the hack as well. As toots has said, any IDE drive will work with her hack.

If the drive is used in a Replay unit, there are NO fans anywhere in the system . . . not on the power supply, not on the drive, not anywhere. Because some people keep a unit in the bedroom, and it dials in nightly (and may record while you are sleeping) a quiet drive is important.

People have made too huge an issue of the "loudness" of Quantum drives. I have Quantums in all my systems, and even own the Fireball LM 30 gigger, which started this whole "my god it's so loud!" debate. It sounds like a hard drive. Which means if you listen closely you can tell that it's doing something, but otherwise you just hear the general noise of your computer.

The Fireball LM is by far the LOUDEST of all my quantum drives, and again, it's not remotely loud at all. Since I don't think anyone here even owns the AS, which is an entirely different drive, I'd say it's impossible to say that this thing is somehow going to keep you up at night.

Incidentally: The IBM drives that came in my two Gateway computers are far and away the loudest hard drives I've ever heard. So, based only on that, I should say with certainty that "IBM SUCKS!".

For replay TV, you may be able to find a better deal on a 5400RPM drive. The replay TV does not need a 7200RPM drive to record fluid video.

If you can get this drive for cheaper than a 5400RPM, then go for it since I haven't checked prices for a 5400.

Heat is definitely of some concern for the Replay TV unit. Like someone said earlier, there are no fans and if you plan on running a two drive system, you might get a heat problem if it isn't in a well ventilated area.

Just my 2cents FWIW...
