http://www.us.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10243355&loc=101 This is a deal posted a last month. Buycom has the 30GB Quantum Fireball Plus for $148. Get your total over $150 and use the $30 off $150 coupon.(This coupon is for all customers, returning and new. You know where to find them. These are bigbigsavings.)

This drive also has a $30 rebate
http://www.quantum.com/quantum/promos/030700_rebate_form.htm

Add free shipping until tomorrow night (Wednesday) and your final cost is around $90. Sell your old drive to your brother and your cost drops even more.

Let me beat the "been posted already" crowds and say that yes, while this deal has been posted, it definitely bears repeating. I bought this drive a couple months ago from buy.com, and it's incredible. You just can't get a faster 30 gig drive for this price.

I thought this promotion is expired. After I checked the link above,
the expire date extended to 12/31/00 (from 10/01/00 and 12/31/00).

[edit]
I mean the rebate promotion.

Quantum is VERY slow in mailing out rebates. Be sure to keep copies for reference.

Gazza!! The rebate states at the top, for purchases between 10-1-00 to 12-31-00.

I got my rebate pretty quick. The only small little annoying detail is that this thing is LOUD. If you really thrash the disk (like using Ultra Fractal to render an image to disk that is huge - 4096x4096) the thing sounds like popcorn. I thought that comment about it sounding like pop poping was just joking around but tonight I made it work... The similarity is uncanny.

I'm happy with the price and the speed though. Can't beat the price.

I have 'em in RAID, Capster... One of the fastest drives around, but also one of the noisiest... With two of 'em in RAID, it makes quite a racket... :frown: Great deal if yer case has 'nuff sound dampening, tho... Next closest performer would be the (so-I've-heard) ultra-silent IBM Deskstars, which cost an extra 50% more... ($130, ballpark)

When you say 'Next closest Performer' do you mean these are faster than the Deskstars?
(which are only ~30% more at $122, basicly no rebate)

Has anyone seen a review comparing the new Maxtor Diamondmax against the 75GXP Deskstars?
The Diamondmax is only 5400rpm, but has higher density disks, like the 40GV. So the access time is higher, but what is the real world sustained thru-put?

I'll say this: 45mb/sec writes and 51mb/sec reads (or vice versa) on my Quantums in a RAID running off the FastTrak66-and yes I know the Ultras can be hacked but I got the controller after all this.

As to the sound my run fairly quiet, much quieter than my ex-Maxtor 6800 plus and I'll take these babies with the two rebates ANY day over the 75 GXP. Storage Review has shown that the IBMs hold the ground on these but don't beat them and it's really their silence that gives them their Leaderboard position.

I'd like to see somebody post their IBM RAID results.

PS I just picked up one yesterday from buy.com 120 GB of video editing love!!

Maxtor bought out Quantum. It's been three months and I still haven't seen my check. All I got was a post card saying that my rebate check is in processing. The rebate will be mail out w/in 6-8 weeks.

Circuit City B&M has the Western Digital 30.7GB rebatable model for $129.99 less $30 WD rebate and $20
Circuit City Rebate. Net Cost $79.99.

Rosebud: The only drive I see on special is the Western Digital 30.7 gig 5400 rpm WD307AARTL drive for $149.99 - $30 mail in rebate - $20 circuit city rebate = $99.

More expensive than this deal, and a much slower drive.

They may have been showing the price as $129.99 with the $20 CC rebate already built in.

From what I've seen on the web....speed goes something like this for 7200rpm 30gb+ drives

Performance:
IBM, Maxtor, WD, Quantum, Fijitsu

Noise Level (loudest first):
Quantum, IBM, Maxtor, Fijitsu

My two pesos...hopefully this won't generate a "mine quieter" or "mine is faster" debate

Vpham97,

It does say on the rebate form I'm looking at for this drive, that once 6-8 weeks has passed, to call 800.624.5545. Maybe you just need to call them to find out what the deal is?

To everyone else in the forum,

Thanks for the amazing deal! I can't hardly believe I got this drive for under $100. I've been searching for a deal like this for a couple weeks now, and you guys came through. Bravo!

Looks like the price has dropped a little since the last time this deal was posted. When I bought it the first time around, I didn't have to add anything to get the total over $150.

Now I'm interested and ready to buy another. So, what $2.00 item did you guys add to get it over?

lnguyen:

So what happened when you tried to run these in a server? I thought servers were a major part of Quantum's business.

Here we go again.

It's simply impossible to rate drives for speed based only on manufacturer. You have to look at specific models. And depending on how you read StorageREview's rankings of this drive (there was considerable debate about that), it's either the fastest IDE drive, or the second-fastest to IBM's DeskStar. There's no maxtor or western digital drive in the equation.

Souka: Where did you read these rankings? Can you give us a link?

And again, posting that "it just don't work" to run these drives 24/7 isn't that helpful. What happened? Did they burn up? What did Quantum do about it? If you just returned the drive, what makes you think it wasn't just a faulty drive, rather than a faulty company/product line?

Yes, I have the drive and I love it, but I'm not somehow blind to criticism. I just don't like it when people post sweeping statements with absolutely nothing technical to back them up.

I bought this hdd few months back and it is absolutely fast! Somehow, I expected the disc to be loud but it ain't. It all depends on which batch of hdd that you get. Anyways, great deal ! I'm still waiting for my rebate though.
