Something cheap to bring your total up to $150 before c0vp0n:

$5 USB A Extension

Thanks for a great find! I was bummed because my 40gig WD ($109 aft rebate) is on backorder and I need a big drive NOW!

Well according to Storage review there's not that much diff between the quantum and the Ibm drives , both are fast but Ibm wins out with quality plus it's ata100.
I just bought another Fireball to go with the other buycomp deal a few weeks back so a good possibility of a raid setup.
I just added 10 cd rom coloured cases to the deal $2.99 if i remember.

lnguyen: sounds more like you got a bad drive than it couldn't take it in the server environment.

Sound: if you reread my post above you'll notice I wasn't overly critical and I'd take this price for a 30gb over the IBM. People *should* know that these drives are loud though...

buy.com coupons: enter it on the check out page.

Daimon...
Get a copy of Drive Copy from Powerquest. Usually $39.95 at BB or CompUSA. Easy to use, almost fool proof. When copying, will also expand partions on the fly.

Are these drives worth saving $30 over the IBMs. I want to get RAID too, so are these compatible with it and how do they like it?

Regarding the rebate, is the Quantum/Maxtor merger(or takeover?) gonna affect the sending out of the rebate(s) in any way?

I would certainly hope not.

I've had nothing but good experiences with Quantum hard drives so far. I've bought about 6 for systems for other people, and everytime I sent a rebate in I got a check about 8 weeks later. Performance wise, Quantum makes great drives. Had some probs getting BIOS to recognize full capacity on a couple of them, but with newer boards it's not a problem.

bigjon I have the exact same problem. Ordered 2 WD's 40 gig last week for my new RAID setup but on back-order. Got the K7&?? (whateverthehelltheyarecalled) RAID mobo and a T Bird will be here on Monday, BUT no drives.

So got me some of these puppies for $146 plus some notepads for $6 minus the $30 coupon minus $30 MIR, so they'll be about $90. Can't beat that! Got 2 for a friend and he absolutelly loves em. Can't wait for em to get here.

From what I gather at Storage review, the Quantum is the fastest IDE HD beating the IBM 75GXP in most I/O meter benchmarks. The 75GXP however supports UDMA/100 and is supposed to be quieter.

So far as I know, the Quantums are really high quality drives. Quantum used their SCSI technology to produce the Fireball LMs. Compared to my DiamondMax Plus 40 the Quandum seemed to be not only faster, but quieter. So possibly it depends on which batch of drives you got (like someone said before).

I've already get my rebate for the drive I bought a couple months before. I just bought another one.

I don't think the noise is an issue... I guess I've been used to quiet drivers as I've used IBMs most of the time. Once these babies get boxed up and put under a desk I don't think it will be very noticable. Definately a nice drive...

Ordered and received 2 drives from BUY.COM. I had them 2 days after I ordered them. Congrats to BUY.COM on their quickness in processing orders. I have never had a problem with them. Drives seem great so far, fairly noisy yes, but fast and cool.

On another note, now I want to send the rebate in on the drives, but I'm reading the rebate on the web site, and from what I can gather, I do *not* need the UPC symbol off the drive boxes for the rebate? Just a copy of the receipt that I printed from the BUY.COM web site, and the online form that I filled out at the Quantum site. Seems like someone could *take advantage* of that situation. I have 2 drives and 2 receipts, but to the same address. Hope it doesn't cause a problem.

Wonder if QUANTUM will retain their name on their products, or if all will merge under MAXTOR.

I remember when SEAGATE bought out CONNER. I had a CONNER tape drive that I had a hell of a time getting support for because I guess SEAGATE kinda figured screw all you guys with CONNER stuff.

Why are the lesser HD makers buying out the better HD makers? Conner used to be one of the best HD makers. I still have a Conner 170MB sitting in my 486. Quantum makes better drives than Maxtor. One got boughtout by dead chicken (ok so Seagate drives are not as bad as they used to be) and the other got bought by Maxtor which makes drives that are not as fast or as reliable (my understanding is that about 5% of all Maxtor drives are DOA and Maxtor drives have a reputation for not being overclockable though this may have changed). What is up with that?

I too wondered about the Quantum rebate not requiring anything other than a copy of the receipt, which since it is on your computer, can obviously be tampered with. This is why I also sent a copy of the packing list that came with the drives. This lists has serial numbers of the drives. I also made copies of the UPC bar code from the side of the OEM brown box. I mailed these along with the "receipt" I printed up.

Could someone please explain to me the significance of ata/udma-100,66,33??

I want to run an pIII800 133mhz fsb system with pc133 ram. Should I really try to get a ata/udma-100 drive or will a 66 be negligably slower?

Thanks,
GeW

well, it depends on what your motherboard can support. if you're getting a p3 800, there's a good chance it'll support ata66. and ata100 isn't that much faster than 66, from what i hear, if at all faster.

so what do you guys think:

Maxtor DiamonMax 40 UltraDMA100 7200rmp 30gig for $120 (buy.com 30 off 150)

or

Quantum Fireball Plus UltraATA66 7200rpm 30gig for $90 (buy.com 30 off 150 + mail in rebate)
