Also, the $$/gig works out like this, for those lazy bastards out there
10 gig = $7.20/gig
15 gig = $4.30/gig
20 gig = $4.05/gig
30 gig = $2.97/gig

bcombs:
You are correct. I figured someone would call it to my attention. It's true mine died. When I said they'd last you for years I was considering the fact that I've never lost out on one. Even if I had one die they would always replace it...almost always with a newer/bigger model.

Fanon:
Again, try reading more carefully before shooting your mouth off. You might notice that I did re-iterate a deal on Western Digital drives comperable to the one in the topic.
So you don't like my opinion, too bad...but don't try to tell me that I don't contribute.

Nazzy you crack me up . Just how many of your 'precious' WD drives have blown up on you ? ... "Oh, but it's really cool 'cos they talk ever so sweet to me over the phone and then order me a replacement."
HELLO MCFLY !! Man what are you saying ???? Has it ever occured to you that a Hard Drive might be "expected" to last just a little longer than a few months?

I really think you should consider switching sides here...

btw.. I've had lots of hard drives from lots of manufacturers. Never a problem with any. Just be sensible about it.

So NazzyG, where is your RMA return rate data to back up your OPINION?

The fact is, all we know is what we have used and you can spout opinions all you want but can you stop the thread crapping?

I have owned 3 Quantum drives and not one has failed on me. I have owned 2 WD drives and had to RMA one. Does that mean WD is the devil company to avoid at all costs? NO.

As to your wonderful customer service statements, did it ever occur to you that they have such a wonderful RMA system because they RMA alot? hehe.

Check out these threads genius:

Western Digital sucks thread

Hey look there is another one devoted to Western Digital

lordgord & hellraven:

All I've got to say is I've seen very little constructive come from either of you and all you've done is attacked me personally. I'll say this one last time...try acting like adults and keeping the conversation intelligent.

I've backed up my "opinion" with my experience in our IT department. Statistically, I have a very firm argument. You don't have to accept it and I hardly expect people like you to even consider it, but personal attacks are childish and no way to argue a point.

I'm no longer reading this thread...the conversation has gotten way to jeuvenile to be of any use to me.

apparently nobody read this, so i'll post it again:

listen, this topic has been beaten to DEATH! i've been browsing anandtech and the ng's for a long time now, and EVERYhard drive discussion goes like this:

"I'll never buy a <<Insert name here>> again, it died on me after XXX days! I'm only sticking with <<Insert name here>>. I've never had a problem with them."

THAT'S JUST THE WAY IT IS!! so buy Quantum, buy WD, buy Maxtor, buy IBM, it don't matter. Go for $$ per meg and performance. End of story.

Livan: The drive doesn't come with anything, just the drive. An ATA/66 cable is included with the Promise Ultra 66 controller card. You can get it, as noted here, at Onvia for around $20 shipped.

as far as speed and reliability, the quantum beats the western digital in my experience. i currently have both drives in my system, a quantum 30 gig 7200 rpm drive (master) and a western digital 30.7 gig 5400 rpm drive (slave). they are both very reliable but the quantum wins because it is definately faster. i realize that it is comparing apples to oranges because one is 7200 rpm and one is 5400 rpm but this is in response to somebody's claim that the 5400rpm WD is faster than the 7200rpm quantum.

After many months on this forum, the fight still rage on.

My WD Caviar was developing bad sector after 9 months. Western Digital FedEX me an advanced replacement they will send you a replacement even b4 they receive your dead HD if you gave them your credit number.) Their CS was pretty friendly and didn't hassle me around. So these thing do die.

The Quantum is a pretty good drive considering the price, and they have a good warranty also. They were taken over recently by Maxtor. If my memory is correct, they are now the #2 manufacture after the merger.

Update: I ordered one of the 20G drives Monday afternoon. I got my drive today, Wednesday!!!! That is FAST! It is a drive only. No manual, no disk, nothing. You can get the setup disk from Quantum's website before you install the drive. Piece of cake.

This drive is not only bigger and faster than my old WD, it's much quieter!

Not bad for $80. Thanks for the hot tip!

No problem Fanon.

I posted the deal, but didn't really want to get involved in the "this company sucks/doesn't" debate. Personally, I think that everyones' oppinion is valid if it is backed up by their experience with the hardware being discussed and not just what they think is true. People disagree.

If the "Hot Deal" I, or someone else posts, isn't a "Hot Deal" because the hardware doesn't live up to its specs, everyone else who sees the thread should know this. On the other hand, company XXX sucks doesn't help much either. We're all visiting this forum for a "Hot Deal", that's what we should be focused on, one way or the other.

Not sure if you are lecturing me or not. Doesn't really matter because I love my new drive.

My older drive tested out to 6500 or so in SiSoft Sandra. This new one tests out to 16000.

I also have the 30 gig but havent hooked it up yet.In Quantums discription of the design of the 30 gig drive they claim it has the same drive design as their SCSI drives on the center axile to reduce noise. We will see.............

I have a Quantum Bigfoot 4.3GB drive for nearly 5 years now, and it still works perfectly. This drive was my primary for 4 years - only in the beginning of this year did i finally get a new 20bg. I still use the 4.3 as a backup drive. I heavily torture my drives (lots of copying and game playing), and not one bad sector, not one problem with it. Its noisy, but you can't expect much from a 5 year old "bigfoot" drive.

I don't find this drive noisy at all. I think it transfers more vibration to the case than comparable Maxtor or IBM drives, so if your drive cage or computer case is not real solid, this drive will generate more racket.

So far after two days, I like this drive. It isn't noticably faster than a Maxtor Plus 40 it replaced, but HD Tach shows that it is.

I got my 30GB drive yesterday. Blows away my current WD 5400 RPM. Sandra HD Benchmarking utility gave it a 13,489 ranking...very fast. I have never had a quantum drive before, but this one seems quiet and fast.
