I have a WD 20GB and it is very loud! Which is quieter, this Quantum, the Maxtor or the IBM?

It shows up as $149.95 in my cart, and it says that it's $114.95 after mail in rebate. Still a good deal IMO...

I had a Seagate 17.2 in my DishNetwork 7200 satellite reciever...noisy as hell...replaced it with a Maxtor 30GB 7200....much quieter....I have 2 Maxtors in my main pc....pretty quiet....I have heard that IBM (I think) makes an ultraquiet drive.....but Quantum are fairly noisy...especially the Bigfoot series......but Quantum in my experience tend to fail quickly, maybe I just got bad drives......

NO!!!!!
I have Quantum FIRE BALL.... No wonder why they call it
FIRE BALL!! SO LOUD.. Not worth it..
Better to get WD or Maxtor..for good price..
(WD is around $130)
You can Price Match Maxtor 40gig 7200 ($179)at Staples with Office Depot
or one of those YAhoo! Shopping Mall (they have it for $149) and
you can mostly have it for $130. Maxtor gives 40.9 Gig or 45Gig so after install
you won't lose hdd space for no reason.

If you want to get NO SOUND Hard disk drive, get Samsung Spin Point.
I think they make least sound.

<Good Luck hunting>

Typical Anandtech responses..."mine rules", "this loud:, yadda yadda. First of all, the new AS Quantum drives are NOT loud. The LM was the last of the loud drives across the board. Secondly, I have both a WD and Maxtor, they work great. My friend has a Quantum, it works great. Real world performance, no difference. Quality control of CURRENT drives, similar. In other words, go to Storage Review. You'll get way to many idiotic posts where people rely on misinformation, third hand "user" opinions, archaic repuations here. The only drawback from the Quantums right now btw, is the time it takes to get your warranty. This is happening to everyone and unlike people's misguided opininons can be taken as a fact.

Thanks KevinH for bringing some logic to all of this.

To the other idiots: StorageReview says the Quantum AS is among the quietest drives they've ever tested.

It turns out, see, that different drive models have entirely different characteristics, even though they're from the same manufacturer. Imagine!

i have a WD 40GB 7200rpm/ata 100 which i picked up at a local OM closing store for $100.77
it's surprisingly quiet. if it weren't for my hd led, i would never know that it's running.

the free-after rebate 50x cdrom that i got from OM on the other hand... it's as loud as my integra.

My maxtor is REAAALLLLY quiet. I would guess IBM or Maxtor would be the best buy for a balance of quality and sound.

Folks:

Please, if you're considering a new HD, just go to www.storagereview.com and read the reviews.

There is no way you can say Brand A is better than Brand B. Because every HD manufacturer has put out some real junk. Read the reviews on the specific model # you're interested in, and judge for yourself.

NOt trying to attack folks here, who mean well, but making guesses about which MANUFACTURERS are best for speed, price, quality... it just makes absolutely no sense.

The AS series from Quantum is quieter than the WD or the Maxtor and also 20GB platters.

I hate rebates. Rebates take way too long and it's not even certain. MUST GET 40GB 7200 drive for under $130!! Can't find any!

I've just replaced a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 40 drive w/ this Quantum AS drive. The new Quantum drive is whisper-quiet, while the Maxtor was neither loud nor quiet. Since the Quantum drive has 20 GB/platter, it's somewhat faster (seek times are about the same).

I have to admit the first time I bought this drive was from buy.com, and that unit failed within a day. The replacement drive, purchased from outpost.com has been fine for the past few days. The Maxtor has performed reliably for 8 months, and will be moving into a friend's system.

In short, the performance drives to buy at this time are the IBM 75GXP, the WD 40BB, or the Quantum AS series. Maxtor drives, on the other hand, are popular at retail and can be had for slightly cheaper if you use Staples pricematch/coupon. Personally, I'd rather get the faster drive from outpost w/ no sales tax & free next-day shipping and wait a few months for the rebate.

If you check storagereview.com click on database... select the IBM and the 60gb version of this drive the Quantum 60gb AS then click iometer indices, you will see the GXP outperforms this drive by about 15%
