As long as we're relying on ancedotial evidence here.

I've had a Quantum fireball series 840MB drive last until this very second, running 2/47 being beat to hell in a small little server. Keep in mind I bought this drive 5 or so years ago when 840MB drives were HOT STUFF. Nary a peep from it, runs great (albeit feeling REALLY slow now. )

Of course, I've had 2 bigfoots fail. I've also have every single drive manfucturer fail on me, save IBM (yet). I do have an IBM 2GB SCSI disk that seems to be on it's way out though. Dying slowly..

I'm am EXTREMELY hard on hard drives, and have yet to find an IDE drive that can withstand the beating I give my workstation. That little quantum is the closest I've came.

so.. just offering some contradictory ancedotes.

$30 rebate for 30G AS in december came yesterday. Sweet. Total cost $86.

That rocks! Now I need another sweet deal for RAID!

Well, I'm not about to argue about a whopping 15% performance gain*.

(* Under specific circumstances, and only under some of the tests.)

By all means, pay any price.

Bfarvevevfhhh,

Just managed to get a pair of the maxtor 40gb/7200 drives from staples today for 127.20 each including shipping/tax. Not easy, had to call 5 different times, finally got a csr to PM newegg 130 drive + 10 shipping - 20 coupon + 7.20 (6% NJ tax) == 127.20.

First 3 csr's said they had to match newegg's overnight delivery charge ($28.45=SUCK), since the staples drive ships overnight, 4th noticed that newegg was oem, staples not, 5th and last one finally didn't bust me for matching overnight shipping.

If anyone got away without matching the shipping, I'd like to know???

dude

yeah, i hope so. Looked at the specs and both this and the quantum fireball AS + both claim to run about 3 decibels. Hoping to have to strain to feel the power up vibration, let alone hear operating noise.

subjectively, how do you feel about noise level?

The first HD I ever owned was a Quantum. For an AMIGA 500 (if that dates me a bit).

I just picked up a 20 Gig Fireball AS at Staples for about $79 ($109-$30 coupon when there still was a 30 off 100 coupon.) Too bad I couldn't use the rebate, or it would have been $59. I love the thing so far. I had a Maxtor 10 gig 7200 in my system before, but it had a couple of bad sectors very early on in it's life (after three months) and has since been relegated to just a storage space before going to the CDR.

Whisper quiet is right. The Maxtor sounds like a freight train in comparison.

Just my observations... They are both the same company, now, anyhow.

i bought the 40 gb drive and it isn't loud at all. I also bought it at the end of december and got my rebate in a month or two, so i guess i got lucky in the turnaround time.

You guys were lucky. It took 5 months for my rebate to come. If I didn't fight for it, I probably would never see it. The rebate check was sent a few days after I filed complaint to BBB.

i have the 20gb 7200 Lm something version.
whenever i run the HD or do'n tasks, there is this constant "click" sound, i guess its normal op noise.
and after a couple months i get bad sectors.
never heard such loud noises, nor have i gotten bad sectors on Hds i have used in my life
i'd get Maxtor as they are cheaper

Guess I must be extremely lucky as I got my 2nd rebate in about 6-8 weeks (mailed in January, got in the middle of March). Of course, the first rebate took about 4 months or more .
