They actually stink. I was doing a D/800 build for a customer this afternoon and I picked up a 30G Quantum Fireball Plus AS 7200rpm ATA/100 drive because it was a little cheaper than the Maxtor today. Well, I haven't used a Quantum for a couple months, and damn, they reek!
The OEM packaging is hard to open, just like the little 100g bags inside Old Dutch boxed chips. But when you get it open and deeply sniff the aroma of the drive (like you would any new computer hardware) it stinks to high heaven. The scent is difficult to describe, but I would call it a mixture of diesel fuel and broccoli, with a touch of lemon. It actually smells a lot like my cat's litter box, which was uncomfortable for me during the build. I kept thinking the customer would complain of an unsanitary computer.
Just wanted to give you guys a heads-up.
Quantum drives stink -- literally.
