"Maybe you just used the wrong notation or something but who cares if a HD can withstand 200grams pressure? Big deal, I'm sure most pieces of paper can withstand 200g preasure. (suspend a piece of paper by the sides and weigh it down with 200g of something I doubt it will break)."

That means it can withstand a 200G shock. In other words 200 times normal gravity. But it is not a constant 200G. It is only for a fraction of a second. For example when you drop your computer while bringing it home from a LAN.

Anyway I have used hundreds of HDD's at work and home and the ones that always worked the best were Quantum and Maxtor. I have only had 1 Quantum fail(immediately). I have only had 1 Maxtor fail (during the warranty period). That is less than 1% for either Quantum or Maxtor as I have used more than 100 of each brand. I have Quantum drives that are over 6 years old and still work. I have also had great success with Seagate though I have not touched a Seagate drive in about 3 years.

Didn't Maxtor buy Quantum a couple months back??? I remember reading that some were.

The Fireball Plus AS DOES NOT suck!! Just look at the Cuda III! The Plus AS did not perform up to expectations, but it does not suck regardless, its a very decent drive, I got a 40giger for a mere $115. However, it looks like the Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 60 will be the fastest 20GB platter hard drive before 60GXP comes out, I would choose th DiamondMax Plus 60 or the Fireball Plus AS depending on price. Oh yea they're both quiet drives, the Fireball Plus AS is possibly the quietest Fireball every produced.

Alright alright...I'll take back that comment.

The AS doesn't suck, but after the near SCSI seek times enjoyed by the LM I was hoping for a bit more. But the AS isn't a bad drive really.

I would recommend Seagate or WD. The seagate ata baracuda is based on their server grade SCSI drives which is the industry standard Drives for servers.

The performance difference between drives is BS in real world use. When you start getting into performance issues on servers, that is another issue.

I'll take reliablility anyday. I have also RMA drives to both seagate and WD (although not for over a year)with out problems. I am a network engineer and consultant and can say I have RMA's many more quantum & Maxtor drives over the years then seagate or WD.

A vote of confidence for Quantum (even if they are the same company now...) I have both Quantum and Maxtor. The Maxtor hadn't a chance to break down, but my old Quantum did--which was likely the maid's fault because I think she dropped it. I called Quantum and gave them the serial. They immediately gave me an RMA, and since they had no replacements, they paid me $107 for this disk, which is twice its resale value and more than I paid for my 30GB LM!! Maxtor makes great 5400rpm disks like my 60GB DM60, which is the quietest disk I've ever encountered. Their high-rev disks seem extremely noisy, more than Quantum's. The Quantum LM is the king of IDE seek times, and arguably the reigning IDE speed champion (and is irrationally cheap for its quality). I've replaced my LM with an IBM 75GXP for reduced noise, and they're about the same class. Consult Storagereview.com.

<<Their high-rev disks seem extremely noisy, more than Quantum's.>>

Thats false and you know that. The DM+40, +45, and +60 are nearly muted performers.

I also disagree with a previous post stating that Maxtor and Quantum RMA more than Seagate and WD.

Seems to me that no matter what the brand name, you find devotees and horror stories. In other words every one makes some lemmons. I have had good luck with Quantums and Maxtors, never owned an IBM, ususally out of my price range. It all comes down to what you want to pay and what is available at that price when you are shopping. It seems foolish to pay more for an equivent drive because of the name on it.

i've had good luck with all drives. My maxtor decided to reformat itself once when i shorted out a motherboard, but the seagate in there with it survived. Plus my maxtor is noisier than my faster spinning ibm . Its all a moot point anyways. All of them license IBM's technology, and besides didnt maxtor buy quantums drive business?

here is my 2 cents...

between maxtor and quantum, I would go with Maxtor. I've had good luck w/ all brands of drives except for a particular model(Quantum Viking II SCSI).
as for IBM, I really like their SCSI drives, I never used their IDE's though. Just call IBM back and keep trying until you get a CSR who will give you an RMA. I've gone through a dozen CSRs before one finally issued me a RMA.

good luck

I would have to go with Maxtor on this one since they offer a "No Questions Asked" warranty replacement policy

Another Maxtor good.

I was building a box with the new south bridge and really pushing it. 113fsb, PCI37, VIO3.6, 9.5X, Homemade rounded ata100 cables. Dual boot. Dual software raid on different stripe sets. Do it again, tweak, reinstall, turn off Acousitc Management etc.etc.etc. Finally found the config I liked after a couple of weeks but noticed some drive errors. Duh...No kidding? Went to Maxtor's site used their low-level format tools. Absolutely perfect again and fast. Just for kicks I had these bench at 33000 Sandra

The real point is that if Maxtor didn't have their great warranty I would have been more careful and by default had less fun.

I'm very pleased with my DiamondMax Plus 40gb, 30gb, & 20gb drives, ATA 66, 100, & 100 respectively, but that's used as single drives. There is good evidence (see StorageReviews.com Forums, among others) that at least the earlier ATA66 variant performs very poorly in RAID 0. I don't know about the newer ones. This maybe oughta be a factor in some people's choice.

Noise-wise, all I can hear is fans. I'm not aware of any of the above being audible. I have older 4.3gb Quantums and 10.1gb IBMs that I can hear clicking - actually more like "clattering" - very clearly.

In my very limited experience I've only had one drive fail. That was a 4.3gb Quantum that I inadvertently oversized a last partition in with FDisk. FDisk accepted the size I assigned, and the drive died. I wouldn't blame that on Quantum.

Maxtors are the best - I have a tough little 4.3 diamondmax that still works after 3 years and a three foot drop onto a wood floor. My 40 gig maxtor is fast and quiet as are my 13 and 17gig maxtors. I just got a Quantum Plus LM for my server and it is very fast, but LOUD. Man, it wakes me up at night and it's in the other room. I've had two WD caviars and had to RMA both after they started clicking. I've had a couple Seagates and they are very reliable, but my 6.5 was the slowest drive I have had. I can't complain about my IBM deskstar either cause it is real quiet and has given me no problems yet.

I have a Quantum Fireball LM. Great drive except as everyone say it is VERY NOISY. When I first got my new system I thought gee the fans inside the case our loud. Of course on further inspection I realized it was the dam hard drive. Oh well to late now.

You can tell that to my uncle, whose DM+40 is the noisiest disk I've encountered recently. Its seeks are profound, and louder than my LM. Of course, both ought to be quieter

I just return a drive to Maxtor never had to call, just went online to get the RMA. What could better than that.

Vote for MAXTOR

I bought a Quantum 9 gig 7200 RPM drive for a friends computer. that was their last 7200 RPM series before they brought out the LM. it's running hot straight and normal still.

it makes my Fujitsu 4.3 5400 RPM drive look like it's standing still!

if I were to buy an IDE drive right now, I'd be torn between the LM, and the next fastest IDE drive in terms of access time (the next fastest having a higher density, therefor better continuous transfer rates).

however, if it didn't have to be IDE, I'd go SCSI and get a Quantum Atlas 10KII 9 gig (hey I'm running 4 gig, and don't fill it up by myself, I have my Family to do that for me).

and later on, buy another, so I can start filling up the amount of bandwidth in that channel. then a SCSI CDROM, and then I could pretty much disable IDE, except for one channel (for another Optical drive, and possibly for more mass IDE storage).

False, false, false. Its either you're very sensitive to noices, the design of your uncle's case is really crappy, or your uncle's hard drive is an isolated incident. There is no way a DM+40 can be considered a loud drive, I mean what the heck, they are half as noicy as the DM+2500(Maxtor's 1st gen 7200rpm). Storagereview agree the DM+40 was the quietest 7200rpm drive in the market, the IBM 75GXP "turned in muted performance reminiscent of the Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 40" says Storagereview. Definitely quieter than Plus LM. In the Fireball Plus AS review SR stated the AS is quieter than LM, I have DM+40 and an AS in my machine now and I can tell you they're about equal.

Small update on IBM. I called them up today and used my dads name. The person i talked to looked up the serial number and w/o question gave me 2 RMA's for my hard drives.

Looks like the guy from yesturday was just trying to look good for his boss.

But i'm still going to get a Maxtor
