To each his own, but I find them unlistenable, and there were many bands in the '80s I liked a lot more (I was a kid of the 80s, actually).

Van Halen. Greatest guitarist ever and greatest rock frontman ever. Mr. Van Halen and Mr. Roth.

Brian May is a good guitarist but there are much better guitar players from the 80s. As far as best rock band, that would be Led Zeppelin although they just barely made it to 1980 :\

You're living in your own private idaho.

Freddie Mercury was a very good singer, and Queen was at times a great band, but their glory days were 1975 - 1977 with A Night at the Opera, A Day at the Races, and News of the World.

They only had a few good songs in the 80s, nothing like the creative output of Bryan Ferry / Roxy Music, Kate Bush, Elivs Costello, Danny Elfman / Oingo Boingo, Nik Kershaw, Howard Jones, Richard Thompson to name just a few.

Funny you should mention those - I saw Husker Du live for the first time when I was 12, and the Minutemen were my favorite band when I was a teenager. I cried when D Boon died. I actually hung out with them for a few hours when they passed through town, when I was 15 or so.

Fortunately, Minneapolis had one of the most active punk scenes in those days, so I was able to see Black Flag 3 times, the Dead Kennedys, Bad Brains, the Exploited, the early Butthole Surfers 3 times, the Minutemen 4 times, the Misfits, Samhain, early Soul Asylum, DOA, the Subhumans, the Dead Milkmen, the Meatmen, Naked Raygun at least 5 times, Big Black 4 times, Die Kreuzen 4 times, Urge Overkill, the Flaming Lips, and many, many other great shows. No wonder I had a persistent ringing in my ears in those days!

Among mainstream bands in the '80s, I really really like the Clash, the Police, Prince in all his iterations, New Order, the Pogues, and Los Lobos (OK, I guess they aren't all THAT mainstream, so I'll throw in early Metallica and Van Halen).

Funny you should say that. This is the third time I've had to be envious of you. I wish I could have experienced the underground scene live in it's hayday. I'm actually doing a week long presentation in my american popular music course. It's going to be very fun.

Tonight I'm gonna have myself a real good time
I feel alive and the world turning inside out Yeah!
And floating around in ecstasy
So don't stop me now don't stop me
'Cause I'm having a good time having a good time

I'm a shooting star leaping through the sky
Like a tiger defying the laws of gravity
I'm a racing car passing by like Lady Godiva
I'm gonna go go go
There's no stopping me

I'm burning through the sky Yeah!
Two hundred degrees
That's why they call me Mister Fahrenheit
I'm trav'ling at the speed of light
I wanna make a supersonic man out of you

Don't stop me now I'm having such a good time
I'm having a ball don't stop me now
If you wanna have a good time just give me a call
Don't stop me now ('cause I'm havin' a good time)
Don't stop me now (yes I'm havin' a good time)
I don't want to stop at all

True that. Sonic Youth > *.

edit: they could be the best of 80's and 90's though. Daydream Nation came out in 1990, and is prolly one of the best albums put out during the 90s.

That was an amazing era, and I was in the right place at the right time. Pretty much every punk band that came to town would play an all-ages show in the late afternoon, and an over-21 show at night. Every single show was between $3 and $5. I have to thank my sister for introducing me to the scene as a kid - I was seeing Husker Du and Loud Fast Rules (later known as Soul Asylum, who put out a few great records before they started sucking) at house parties when I was in junior high.

Journey's "Escape" was the first record I ever bought with my own money. Ohh, the pain!!!

Compared to some of the competition they were still pretty good at that point, even without Greg Rolie. Neil Schon was a very good guitarist (he was the "other" guitarist on Santanna's "Black Magic Woman"), Perry was a good rock vocalist, and they hadn't yet descended completely into top 40 schlock.
