Yeah, I think Queen did most of their best work in the 70's.

My favorite groups from the 80's (having grown up in the 90's) were R.E.M., The Cure and The Jesus and Mary Chain

I agree with the others, Queen was a 70s band. A great band then, but still not the greatest. As for the 80s, that's a hard call, all I know is it definitely wasn't Journey. I can't think of one song they have that is listenable.

Freddie Mercury was a very good singer, and Queen was at times a great band, but their glory days were 1975 - 1977 with A Night at the Opera, A Day at the Races, and News of the World.

They only had a few good songs in the 80s, nothing like the creative output of Bryan Ferry / Roxy Music, Kate Bush, Elivs Costello, Danny Elfman / Oingo Boingo, Nik Kershaw, Howard Jones, Richard Thompson to name just a few.

Fcuk me you don't hear that name very often...

The Smiths imo. Oh and 80s U2 were awesome too.

How about the Police? Great band. U2 was the best ever in the 80s. Unfortunately, they suck now.

Aside from 3 good CDs in the 80s he came back with a very strong CD in 1999 titled 15 Minutes, about fame and its aftermath. The songs are still pop-rock, but with the depth of Costello or Aimee Mann rather than his earlier good but more shallow work.

not even close

Depeche Mode, R.E.M. , Duran Duran, The Cure, The Police, U2 (they suck now) are all better imo

Van Halen. Greatest guitarist ever and greatest rock frontman ever. Mr. Van Halen and Mr. Roth.

Worst band ever!
Right. Name a band that could get back together right now and be a bigger draw than the original Van Halen.
That lineup could sell out the Grand Canyon.

Metallica is the best band of the 80s. Van Halen is also up there, only with Roth.

The Cure are a joke. The lead singer is a hypocrite tool of the music industry. Getting past the fruity hair and bright red lipstick, how can you be depressed when you make millions by singing? How can you hate the mainstream when you go on MTV (a.k.a King of Mainstream) talking about how you despise everyone wearing the same clothes, even though you wear plain black clothes that can be found at any Wal-Mart? That's three hypocracies in only one commercial. The only depressed singers I will ever give credit to for being the real deal are Kurt Cobain and Layne Staley, because both of them paid the ultimate price in proving that they were messed up individuals. That jackass from the cure is just putting on his makeup everyday and putting on an act.

Bit of a rant but that a-hole just pisses me off.

Evidently you didn't see the Monsters of Rock tour that VH w/Sammy Hagar headlined.
Metallica was there, too....played to half-empty stadiums that were only filled when Van Halen was set to hit the stage.

Metallica didn't hit their popularity stride until the 90's.

Unfortunately their music had dropped off severely in quality by then. I still respect Metallica, but everything after their first four albums is lame dinosaur rock when compared to their earlier stuff.

He only had one hit in the US ("Wouldn't it be Good"), but his first 3 CDs were filled with a number of well-crafted pop songs from "Faces" and "Human Racing" to "Radio Musicola." His '99 CD 15 Minutes was also quite good. He's certainly no Costello or Elfman but he did create as much or more worthwhile music in the 80s as Queen did.

(In other words, not so much how great Kershaw is, just that dozens of artists did more and better in the 80s than Queen did and he was one of the dozens I happened to think of.)
