Everyone here sems to be partiual to half life2 but I've heard from many that Far Cry tops that in most aspects. As for me personally, I have only halo (which I love) and rainbow 6 III: Raven Shield (very realistic). Which games are the best in the First Person Shooter catagory?

best of all time? quake1/CTF. it made the multiplayer FPS massive and successful, and what it is today.

single player: deus ex - amazing story w/ great plot twists, lots of choice in gameplay style, a flawless integration of FPS and RPG

multiplayer: quake1 CTF... quad rockets + strength = 8x damage rockets:evil:

I thought HL did a lot for the genre. Engrossing single player + awesome MP + CS (even if you're bored of it as I am, or never got into it, you have to admit it was/is a huge phenomenon).

I'm guessing he's asking more about current gen FPSes though. I'd probably agree with OP and go with FarCry. Though recently I've been playing some Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter... pretty kickass game.

Games really need a good story. For single player modes to really catch me. Far Cry was VERY pretty and had decent AI but I personally got bored with it and still have not finished it...

Deus Ex, although the fact that you mentioned Halo makes me think that you should go back to playing deathmatch with ten year olds.

Halo multiplayer is stupid, but beating the game on legendary was fun.

call of duty series is probably my fave for single player.
soldier of fortune 2 is the best for multiplayer.

Even though I don't play it anymore, I agree that SOF2 was the best multiplayer. Probably spent more hours on that than any other game or game format combined.

As for single player, it's a toss up between HL2 and Far Cry for me. I thoroughly enjoyed both for different reasons. For Far Cry, it was the scenery, the wide open environment, the AI and the overall length of the game. I never got tired of playing it, was amazed with the appearance of each level and was disappointed when I reached the end. For HL2, the graphics were stunning, the interaction with the environment, the problem solving and the dialogue. I thought the ending was a bit anticlimatic but I'm happy about the expansions.

You can't go wrong with either IMO and if you enjoy FPS games in the least little bit, you owe it to yourself to play both.

You don't hear much about SOF2's multiplayer, but that's a real shame.

I spent a good half-year playing just SOF2 multiplayer... it honestly had just about everything and was incredibly fun. But then one day I just stopped playing it, and never played it again. And I think the online community has just about dried up completely.

Current gen: HL2.

Super high production values, and a solid plot. I just love the environments so much in that game. They really gave City17 a lot of character.

I'm not a real hard core fps gamer, but I have to say that the games that really got me into the genre have been Unreal Tournament GOTY & UT 2004 / Battlefield 1942 & BF2. Their great for LAN parties. As far as old school, the original Doom stole many hours from my life. I'm more into multiplayer based games though. Even the current generation of story line fps are still too predictable.

I really enjoy WWII FPS games so MoH and CoD are near the top for me. My all time favorite is probably Deus Ex if you can consider it an FPS. I don't like multiplayer, but I have spent a lot of time in CS:S playing bots.
