I have AL Pre-Paid College Tuition (which is breaking the state financially), tuition scholarship, and my co-op pays tuition, plus any money I make while working at my co-op. So I'm pretty set financially.

I've lived on campus, or a 3 bedroom apt paying about $350 + utilities. Since I got my co-op, I basically have to live on campus since apt leases are usually for 1 year and I'd rather not deal with a sublease.

You ever think about transferring to a cheaper school/area in one of the flyover states?

925/mo? easy.

GET ROOMMATES. I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH.

my school did co-ops so i worked 6 months of the year. i used all the money i saved to pay for living costs until my next co-op. worked out just fine. and yes, i've always had roommates.

Don't look at the big apartment complexes right next to campus - those are expensive. Try to rent a room in a house. That's what I'm doing and I pay ~$500/month. It would be quite easy to support myself if I had to.

That said, it costs me about $900/month to live. I spend $200-300/month on food and the rest on fun, and I have more luxuries than some college students do.

I lived in a house right across the street from campus, the total rent was only $450 and I had 2 roomates. Combined with all the bills I was paying less that $200 a month for rent.

Now the condition of the house...... lets just say that you would not want to live there unless you were in college and a dude lol.

I live in a 2 bedroom apartment with 4 guys. The two bedrooms are fairly spacious, each bigger than a dorm room, big closets, 2 bathrooms, we each have our own sink, nice sized living room and nice kitchen.

It came fully furnished and I pay 484/month, with all utilities and 30 dollars of electric covered. We usually go over by a few dollars on the electricity each month. It's located 2 blocks off the edge of campus where the dorms are where I stayed last year, so it's essentially the same.

I think the answer is to find 3 people to get a 4 person apartment, singles or studios are way too expensive. That, or live in the dorms.

If you have never lived on campus, you have to do it at some point. Afterwards, move off campus.

Most people I know live in houses and split it. My own house has 4 people in it with rent split so it comes out to $460/month. Add utilities, internet, food and beer to that and you end up with living costs. I eat about $300/month, utilities are $80/month, internet is $20/month. That comes to $860/mo Canadian, which should be comparable for a town in VA.

Also, small apartments are overpriced.

If you can't handle this, good luck when you get out of college. It doesn't get much easier.

I went to the UW. When I went (10 year ago now) there was plenty of cheap student housing in the area. Go to the HUB and there's a housing office there with postings that are aimed at students. Or check The Daily they used to have a place with ads for apartments. The UW is very close to much more expensive neighborhoods so you have to specifically look for places that are trying to reach students.

Also public transit near the UW is pretty dense so living a little further out but bussing is likely not a major issue plus you get the UPASS for ridiculously cheap (and if you get rid of your car you should keep the pass). And beyond that the UW itself has late night pickup service that will drop you at your door if you have to pull a late evening in the lab. Plus if you are further out the weather is nice enough to walk/bike pretty frequently so you can get exercise just going to class.

Your money options are loans or part time job. For loans if you apply and they say no you can appeal and in my case they always said yes the second time. Otherwise a part time job is not a major deal. You should easily be able to do 20 hours a week while maintaining a good grade, it just takes time management. Or work full time+ over the summer and add that to your stipend. I can't imagine $900 isn't almost enough to make it or even enough in and of itself.

Whatever the case you have a ridiculously cushy position and you will get little to no sympathy here for having your tuition and books covered with a stipend.

Edit: Forgot to add, June timeframe is when most student housing will be emptying out. Look west of the Ave and south of 45th and then North of campus near greek row. There are lots of apts in those areas.

Must be nice.

I'm up to my eyes in student loans. It doesn't bother me all too much though. I think of my edumacation as an investment, so paying it all back in the next several years isn't that big of a deal to me.

Talking about University of Washington Seattle mostly... They're not cheap there. For places that are pretty close the uni: Rent:
Studios starting from $845 to $965*
One bedrooms starting from $955 to $1150*, effective August 1st, 2010
Updated 04/2010

Example of the floor plan: http://www.hfs.washington.edu/uploa...es/Commodore_Duchess/Commodore floorplan3.jpg
Wait, you're in Seattle? Fvck! I think I just felt my property values drop due to proximity to whiny-ness.

Go live in SeaTac and take a 30 minute bus ride. You'll pay $500 for a studio and nobody will have to put up with your insane level of incompetence at life.

I went to UW Seattle...

1. There is plenty of housing around campus (5 block radius) that are not operated by the university and they are cheaper, even for studio or 1 bedroom. In fact if you paid the same price that you would for an UW apartment you could get something far nicer at a private complex. It will also not affect the university feel or social aspect if you stay relatively close. If you really wanted the social aspect then you would find room mates anyways. The only benefit to UW owned complexes is all utilities, UW network for internet, and UW cable tv.

2. Do not park your car with UW, you CAN get other parking at the other complexes in the area. I lived at nordheim and parked my car on the streets for 2 whole years. You just have to figure out where to park and maybe do some creative thinking.

3. Part time jobs are great to make some side money. Find one where you can perhaps study as well. Helpdesk jobs in the library or computer labs are great for this. However, all students know this so openings are scarce. I used to work in the HSL Library in the computer lab helpdesk and it was great to be able to study 80% of the time I was at work. Keep your eyes open, network with current employees, and just keep trying to get at the openings available.

Any other questions, non-whiny, PM me...

It's hard to find housing near UW on craigslist because I don't know the streets at all and a lot of people say, "Near UW" and it's like 5 miles away... That's not near...

I've decided that I'll most likely be giving up the car and just riding my bike/the bus everywhere.

That is the ideal job, but I have no clue if I'll be able to get one of those. Do those jobs basically close during the summer too? Ugh. I have to find a job that could pay for my bills all times of the year if I move the hours up.

The apartment my gf is leaving will be $3000 for 2BR 1BA. Good luck putting 4 people there. You probably need 5 to make it decently affordable.

I paid $1490 when I foudn my 2BR. 1530 when I left. Easy for 2 people, although $800/month might be a lot to some people.

I don't want to live where you live. Too expensive... $800/month is way out of my range... I want to do $400/month because food will be $200/month and then I'll have random expenses that will pop up a lot. Sad. >.<

400 a month for rent? You don't live in Detroit, you're gonna have to share a room to get that price most likely.

But I live in OC, a shared room here is like 500, my own 12x12 room was 710 a month.

Sounds appropriate. I go to cal poly SLO and live about 2 miles away from campus and pay 625 a month for my own 12x12 room.

godamn renting costs still haven't dropped here.

I know. I didn't think I was going to even get a studio apartment for that much. Those are all at least $700/month. :/
