5 miles is far for you? Yeah, you need to change your attitude just slightly. You should search all available places to live within a 10 mile radius (yes, even that would be considered NEAR), and then start eliminating the options based on the price. Once you have a reasonable list of places that fall within your price range, then put them in a specific order such as the convenience of each location. Visit them and make a list of your favorite ones.
You should come out of that with a few great options. Not too complicated or difficult. If you live 5 miles away, why don't you bike it? Check for bus routes, etc.
Me, I moved within 15 min walking distance of my job. Coincidentally, university is also within the same walking distance which is why I'm going back to school shortly. Thankfully the place I found is cheap enough that I could still afford to live on my own while working part time and studying. I think I lucked out; but I would never have gotten here if I made up reasons not to try.
Your situation sounds pretty good to me, a lot of stuff is being paid for you.
