It's more beneficial to live at home if you can so you don't go into crazy debt and can live a better life after school. Live at home as long as you can to save money. You'll end up better financially in the long run. Moving out when you can't afford and able to live at home is dumb. You can move out later when you get a good job cus you went to school.

Financial aid is out of the question. My family has way too high of an EFC. (I think last year when I applied I got like 36K as their EFC) No loans, no grants, nothing. I just have a 100% tuition waiver and I think my father decided he wanted to pay for my textbooks without me asking. I also have about $900/month as part of going to college from teh gubbunmint. (VA benefits, chapter 35) I don't want to get a job if I don't have to... >.< Although I'd like to have spending money every month... le sigh..

So...your tuition is covered. Your books are covered. You have $900 a month to live on, and splitting an apartment with some people costs you about $450 a month.

Well, sir, I only have one thing to say to that.

I'm going to most likely. Parking alone is about $600 a term.

Don't park the car at the university. Park the car at your apartment (which should be included in rent) and ride the bus to school.

Then look somewhere else.

Looking around at the website. That's a fancy nice looking place. Look for more college student-y type places. Think cheaper, older, and not so modern looking.

If you live on campus, why do you need a car?

And forget about getting a job, you're too lazy and you'll be too stressed out from school work.

So I can *gasp* go places that aren't on campus? Oh my... Also, so I can go home whenever I want or go places instead of relying on the public transit system or greyhound or whatever.

Probably. The stress from comp sci is going to kill me probably.

Which school did he say he was going to?

You can walk or bike.. take the bus.
3 miles is ~15-20mins on bike or 30-40 on foot.

Or strategically choose an apartment close to a campus bus route and take the bus.

How do you afford rent in college housing? Not like dorms, but like the studio apartments or 1 bedroom apartments they offer. I don't get how you could even have two people in a studio apartment unless you're a couple.. or you love sleeping really close to your other friend in a tinyass place. 1 bedroom places make more sense with the 1 bedroom for one person and then the living room for the other... but I don't get it otherwise... how do you afford it?

It seems ridiculous to live close to campus if I have to be in a place with 3 other guys in a tiny ass apartment. Fuck. I rather live outside of the city with a couple of other guys in a 1500sqft house or something for cheaper.

Since everyone doesn't know here's the dealio, yo:

 • I have a 100% tuition waiver. (This means I don't pay for tuition, it's completely free)
 • I have my books paid for most probably. (I think my father decided to pay for my textbooks)
 • I have about $925/month as income without a job, and I'd like to stay without a job. The reason I have this income is because I get money for going to school full-time. (This is part of VA benefits, Chapter 35, dependents of survivors blahblah)
 • All good? Idk.

My parents pay for it.

Op, it seems like you want the best of both worlds. If you want to have premium housing, get a fucking job. I have one (full time) and I go to school. As a result I have nice shit.

Is this your first year?

Meh living on campus is not all that its made out to be.

If you want all of the stuff that costs money then you gota work for it. Otherwise learn how to live poor. I dont want to commute 40 miles a day but Im going to, to save thousands.

There is value to that, but if you live within walking distance then you probably won't miss out on much. If you can walk over to your friend's apartment in 10-15 minutes, then you're fine.

First year at a university, but I've been at a community college for a while... (Still going to be at the CC for another year)

Possibly.

Possibly.

That's how the campus at UT Austin works.

There isn't much housing available on campus, so most people live in the neighborhoods around campus.

I went to UW Seattle...

1. There is plenty of housing around campus (5 block radius) that are not operated by the university and they are cheaper, even for studio or 1 bedroom. In fact if you paid the same price that you would for an UW apartment you could get something far nicer at a private complex. It will also not affect the university feel or social aspect if you stay relatively close. If you really wanted the social aspect then you would find room mates anyways. The only benefit to UW owned complexes is all utilities, UW network for internet, and UW cable tv.

2. Do not park your car with UW, you CAN get other parking at the other complexes in the area. I lived at nordheim and parked my car on the streets for 2 whole years. You just have to figure out where to park and maybe do some creative thinking.

3. Part time jobs are great to make some side money. Find one where you can perhaps study as well. Helpdesk jobs in the library or computer labs are great for this. However, all students know this so openings are scarce. I used to work in the HSL Library in the computer lab helpdesk and it was great to be able to study 80% of the time I was at work. Keep your eyes open, network with current employees, and just keep trying to get at the openings available.

Any other questions, non-whiny, PM me...
