Question!!A64 3400+

I am Buying the A64 3400+ and MSIK8N Neo Platinum today.one of my questions is what do you think of this MB/CPU combo and the other is the 3400+ 1mb and 512kb CPU's sell for the same price. is the 1mb L2 gonna be better? i will be OCing and just wondered if one is better that the other.Thanks.

If they're the same price I would get the 1mb cache chip. That said, the 512kb chip is probably clocked 200mhz higher or so. I dunno, I would think that the 1mb chip would be able to overclock the extra 200mhz which would give it the edge. Apparently the 512kb chips perform just fine, there have been many discussions on this lately. The verdict was that 200mhz>512kb of extra cache IIRC.

SO...if you're not going to overclock, go for the 512kb chip I guess. Otherwise I would jump on the 1mb.

ok i will be OCing so ill gain that 200 back easily. and what about this motherboard?is it a good ? do you know of one thats better? ive found that at MWAVE.com i can get a bundled deal with the MSI K8N NEO PLATINUM and A64 3400+ PLUS FarCry all shipped for $538.00 where as newegg has it with no game for $544

You're asking the wrong guy about MSI because I will never buy one of their products again. Here's why:

-I have owned 2 of their motherboards, both of which have failed within 6 months
-there was recently a class-action lawsuit filed against them for knowingly using faulty capacitors on their products

I dunno. I hear the Chaintech board is very good. I am personally partial to Asus and Abit; I have had nothing but good experiences w/ their products over the years. Abit is the best of the motherboard manufacturers IMO, then maybe Shuttle and Asus.

Ok well maybe you can steer me away from MSI hows the overclockin on the MB's u listed? and ill look for some benchmarking and threads in the MB forum for the 3400

yup just was looking at it.it already made up my mind im gonna go with the Abit KV8-MAX3 i think its the same as the pro just with a few addons so it should do very well one thing i sorta like on it is the covered area on the capacitors with a fan.
