Question about activating phone on Cricket

So, this may be a dumb question, so go easy on me. My wife and I are going to get new iPhones when the new model launches next month. I'm doubtful Cricket Wireless will be getting the iPhone 6 at launch (Is this a good assumption?). So, I was thinking we could go to BestBuy and get the phones there (AT&T GSM model). Now, can we just take these phones over to Cricket and have them activated there? Or will we need to have AT&T unlock them to activate them with Cricket?

If you are buying the phones for full price, then yes you can bring any AT&T phone to Cricket. Yes, it will work while still locked to AT&T.

I don't think it will be easy though to just buy phones at BestBuy for full price without you having an account at AT&T. At least it used to be a struggle to do that at the AT&T store (more than a year ago). It should be easy, they sell, you buy, and you take it home. But for phones in the US, unfortunately it isn't that simple.

Btw, Cricket is now a subsidiary of AT&T, they're not two different companies.

You might be able to buy an unlocked version of your phone on Amazon if you want to avoid the hassle of going through Best Buys upsell process.

I don't know if you can buy a new unlocked iPhone, but they have at least a 4th gen now and they also have the Xperia Z2 which is a lot better in my opinion.

The iPhone has never been sold in the US, factory unlocked, at release date. I know this for a fact, because this is the primary reason I've never had an iPhone.

You can also go to the Apple store or buy it from Apple directly. The unlocked version of the iPhone costs more, is worth more for resell, and it works on AT&T as well as T-Mo completely.

By the way, I'm a Cricket customer as well. If you buy the iPhone from AT&T for full price, it'll work perfectly when you put your SIM in it. Cronos said it best. AT&T owns Cricket. Cricket uses the AT&T network, so any phone that is locked to AT&T will work on Cricket.

Awesome, thanks for the info. So I'll try to hit up best buy for an AT&T phone then take it to cricket to activate it.
