Question about Athlon speed nomenclature

I looked in FAQ and couldn't find this, so I figured I'd just ask. I'm sorry if this is a question that has been asked a thousand times, but I figured doing a search on "Athlon speed" wouldn't get me anywhere without reading through a zillion posts...

If I do not plan on overclocking, and I get an Athlon XP 2000 processor, will it actually run at 2Ghz? I looked on newegg.com and they have a lower number next to each processor.

Here's an example:
"AMD Athlon XP 2000+/266 FSB Processor CPU - 2000+/ 1.67GHz -Retail Box"

Does that mean it will run at 1.67 Ghz?

I need to know b/c my motherboard is supposedly stable to just over 2 Ghz and I'd like to get a chip that actually runs that fast.

edit: I am not going to overclock

No, the XP2000+ runs at 1.67GHz. If your objective is to determine if your board can handle the 2000+, first realize that there are two varieties of the XP 2000+, one using the older Palomino core, one with the newer Thoroughbred core, and they function the same but have different voltage requirements, which means your board could conceivably support one but not the other. I'll look up your board at msicomputer.com and see what it takes...

Ok, here we go: All MSI K7T Turbo 2's supports Palomino-core AthlonXP's up to the XP 1800+ model, which runs at 1.53GHz.

Additionally, if it has PCB (printed circuit board) revision 5, then you have more options including all AthlonXP's that have a 266MHz frontside bus, in both Palomino and Thoroughbred variants: CPU support chart for PCB 5 K7T Turbo 2 Hope that helps!

no, it won't
you will have to search around the mobo's pcb
you will see the name of the mobo followed by the revision number

Cool. Thanks so much. I'm visiting my parents now, but when I get back home, I'll crack that sucker open and take a look!

If it isn't revision 5, I'll probably hold off on upgrading my processor until I can get a new mobo that supports the newer DDR ram. My current one supports pc133 ram. I saw the standard then changed to pc2100 and is it now 2700???? Or, am I way way behind the times on that?. I haven't been keeping up with this stuff as much as I should be....

Yep, PC2100 (DDR266) is sort of the baseline now, with PC2700 (DDR333) set to take over that position throughout this year. PC3200 (DDR400) is going to make more headway now that both AMD and Intel have plans to support it.
