I can't speak for the last 6 months since I really haven't been around for much of them, but I can say without a doubt that this place isn't nearly as lively as it once was. I pop in here from time to time and there really seems to be little more than stats thread and an occassional offtopic WTFBBQ thread. I think you can attribute it to a few things:

1) A lot of old timers and active members have either moved on or post much less than before: Smoke, Ray, Engineer, OhioDude, Confused, Robor, Bazilla, Eponymous, IndyJaws, PieDerro, and the list goes on and on. I am sure there are various reasons why. In my life I have become much much busier than I was 6-8 years ago.

2) We don't have a boogeyman to fight. BBR was our boogeyman coming in here talking about stomping this and that. It riled us up and united us to fight through to the end. The people we picked up during those times moved to other projects and strengthened the TeAm as a whole.

3) As mentioned above the races were fun. I looked forward to seeing if Ohiodude picked my race to make a funny commentary on. The mini-team races were fun as well. Lots of smack talking in the team naming threads before the race ever started.

4) No big recruiting drives. If you don't attract a lot of new blood, things stagnate.

I am sure there are other reasons but those as the ones that stick out.

I agree ... and it is us who make this forum.
We could bait the Hard-OCP - they are good, friendly and have a lot of fun too ...

hmmm ....

OK - I said maybe, but it may be definitely. I'm still crunching, and I check the forum almost everyday. I know I don't post as much though.

I've been busier. I'm a volunteer now on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays at TACID (Tacoma Area Coilition of Individuals with Disabilities). They have a small computer lab (10 machines), and I help people with disabilities learn how to use the computer. So ... I help my family on the weekends. That gives me Monday and Tuesday to try to get personal stuff done.

Wow. I don't know what I would do if I had a real job.

Sorry - must end this post. Rudy Toody is on the phone and I can't post ant talk at the same time -- I think we're listening to each other type.

FWIW It is not just happening in our little corner of anand. I have noticed a general decline in the whole forum over the last few years. Posts seem to be down, and members that were active are nowhere to be found. Methinks anadtech is dying.

Interesting. What is it like in other forums? I wonder if other forums are having the similar effects in activity.

I also see a lot of "primadonna syndrome" with members picking and choosing who is L337 enough to talk to and limiting their communications to PMs rather than participating in the forum as a whole.

Reading the responses to my feelings, I am convinced that I was misinterpreting some situations and wish I had not posted them.

Unfortunately, it has been quoted so many times in this thread that deleting or editing my original post would not be much help

Sorry All

It has nothing to do with being a mod, either. Especially in this forum, where we still follow a certain decorum, are pretty much self moderating.

There at times does seem to be a certain clique or sub-group that ignores posts except by others in that subgroup.

TA has always been an inclusive group, no matter your background, country, belief system, you are welcome here. Let's make sure that tradition continues.

I've not visited the other forums, TAS? As I've always felt that this is my home base.

I do miss the days of individual and TeAm races, competitions with other teams, the friendly trash talking during the races. The Red Rascal Rider has been parked in the garage for a long time now.

Even with the changes, I will say that Team Anandtech continues to kick butt in a lot of DC projects, and that continues to make me proud of this TeAm!

may i ask a question?
how on earth do mods operate?
do they sit and read EVERY post that's made???

As soon as my workload in RL deminishes, I'll be more active here ... and I have a few thoughts about races, competions, provocations for action, etc.

Hehehehehe ....

Now you made me go look. I thought it was pretty funny myself

Sid, edited my post, FWIW.

The membership may think so.

Much may depend on how much time a Moderator has to spend and the type of forum.
In the AT forums that I monitor, I look at about 3/4 of the threads and skim through all the current posts in those that interest me. Not as a Moderator, but as a person. Interest can be in a positive or negative way.

Because there are assigned Moderators for each AT forum, they may have a different perspective for their areas.

I have a professional and well as personal life that I have realized gets short changed at times because of AT.

I last participated in DC when RC64 was around and <embarressed>, lost some interest when starting up my own business.

Due to RL, especially work, I personally don't have the time to read all the threads, let alone all the posts. There are certain types of threads I pay attention to more, like the off-topic ones, that may have issues. Even those I don't get to on a regular basis. But then, DC has so few issues to begin with.

Well, I can say I read 1/3rd to 1/2 of the cpu threads, but I do get alerts from Idontcare about bad threads, and aigomorla.

You get alerts from Idontcare about aigomorla?

I don?t think the atmosphere has changed all that much. DC has always been the most helpful and friendly place on the AnandTech Forums and, IMHO, remains so today.

But things have definitely changed. I think all of you have hit on the various reasons we don?t seem to have as much participation and excitement anymore.

  • Lack of a braggadocios competitor that is easy to dislike which was my ?call to arms?. (not mentioning any names, of course)
Shrinking disposable income along with the rising cost of electricity.
Employers more conscious and watchful of their operating costs.
The explosion of so many distributed computing projects.

Feeling a little guilty about the reference that ?some? members are not posting as much as they used to, I must plead guilty. All of the above reasons apply to me except the one about an employer since I?m an old retired guy. Additionally, though not wanting to talk about it too much, I have had some health issues. The main health issue is just plain getting old. I like Harrison Ford?s comment, ?You know you?re getting old when all the names in your black book have an M.D. after them.?

My recent back surgery is going pretty good and now I?m preparing myself for a shoulder operation. Damn, I falling apart ? but I?m not giving up yet. :|

I don?t have a bright solution to offer to change things back to how they used to be but it is still nice to see the occasional post by friends not heard from in a while. I still open up a fresh browser page of the DC Forum many, many times each day.

I have wondered if becoming a mod has altered my behavior a bit. I use to read the forum for the shear enjoyment of it but now I?ve sort of developed a examining squint as I?m more on watch than ever for the out-of-line comment or post. Some of you guys may not realize it but there is a lot of shit that goes on in the other forums. Just reading the mod forum and going through the analysis and handling of various situations leaves me exhausted at times even though I didn?t even participate in the actual handling. We have a whole bunch of folks that seem to be of a grammar school intellect and others that definitely belong in a psycho ward. /smoke shakes head/

Anyway, I?ve just returned from China and it is really nice being back in the USA even with the threat of swine flu. I do believe that the best way to appreciate what you have at home is to take a trip to other places that you think would be interesting and fun.

There?s no place like home.

I noticed we had hit the crapper when the daily stats thread inundated and outnumbered the other posts in the forum.

Things have changed, the old guard has moved on. After the McOwen(Now banned BTW) incident this place went a spiraling down. Not that I've helped the situation. I remember times where drama was high and fights for position were fierce. I no longer feel that is the case. We've tried over the years to boost moral and recruit but we've been met with brick walls from AnandTech as well as those in the anandtech forums outside of this (shrinking) forum.

That being said, the people who frequent this forum are some of the nicest and best people I've had the pleasure of interacting with. This small yet tight community has always been here for each other.
