Question about Dells

Can the CPU be changed in a Dell system? I was thinking about jumping on one of those crazy Dell deals that seem to be floating about all the time, and then swapping out the processor into my machine and dropping the processor that I have now into the machine and selling it.

Reason I asked is that I remember my dad's old gateway can not change processors, he is stuck with like a Athlon 650. I wanted to swap it out, but when I looked around, it did not appear to be possible.

I have a P4 3.06 533FSB sitting in an Abit IS7 which supports the 800FSB P4s, and I was thinking about dropping that into a Dell 4600, with a 3.0 P4 800FSB next time they offer the free upgrade to a LCD.

On the old Gateway, the Bios did not support anything besides the processor that came with the machine. If anyone knows how to change that, let me know. I figure that there is some sort of bios upgrade that could be done, but I could not find it.

So, what is your angle? How much do you turn around and sell the Dell for? Can't the potential buyer just get one themselves from Dell and get a free LCD as well?

yea you can switch out Dell CPU's I did it to mine.

I was running a 1.3Ghz 423 pin and got an adapter and upgraded it to a 1.8Ghz 478 pin, the BIOS wouldnt support anything over 2Ghz

Yeah the BIOS is whats gonna limit you to the max.
