Question about Duron Applebreds

Any oldies out there? I have an old 1.8 Applebred lying around that I feel like messing with.

Firstly, since it's a Tbred core, it should go from 133x13.5 now to 166x13.5 (2.24ghz) no problem, right? I'll have a VF7000Cul HSF on it so heat shouldn't matter.

The real question is the L2 cache. I tried to unlock the cache on this chip before, but there are no good guides on the net. Between what I found on some blogs and a german guide out there, I managed to figure out that I need to scrape off the packaging over the last L2 bridge and connect it.

Once I scraped off the packaging it got really confusing. Nothing underneat sticks out at me as a "L2 Connector" thing. I can't even find the laser-cut hole anymore. It all looks coppery.

Maybe I should have just scraped off over the connecters and left the packaging in between them intact? In my attempts to unlock this thing a year ago I decided it was too dangerous to connect the bridge by going over all that copper between the two ends, so I wound up going off to the side and around the middle part, over what I THOUGHT might be the connecters.

My problem is that the Windshield repair kit I got had a lot of different goops and none of them seemed to dry, so I had no idea which was conductive.

I heard that if the multiplier is locked then the L2 cache is unmoddable. Is that true?

Also, is it ok if I just fill in the entire bridge-area with coductive paint? As long as it doesn't touch any other bridges?

Thanks

I can answer your first question for sure, yes it shoudl handle 166X13.5. As for your second question, I dont think you can unlock the L2 on an applebred, I thought it was just the morgan.

If you google and find the PC Chips support forum, then go the the Socket A section. There is a user there who goes by the name of milt, he can answer all your questions and then some.

thorton was the only core I believe you could unlock the extra cache, and sometimes that didn't always work right. just take a look at the die,if its rectangular, then its the barton-esque core which has the possibility of unlocking. if its more square, its a flat out apple/tbred with only 256k cache. the extra cache physically makes the core bigger/longer.

Well as I understood things, the Applebred comes with 64kb of L2 cache, and since it's a Tbred core it should be able to unlock to a full 256kb of cache.

I'll look for this milt fellow, thanks.

If it is brown, then you can unlock the full 256k L2 cache. If it is green, then it is probably "superlocked" and you may not be able to.

If you look very carefully at the bridge, there is two very small "dots" on either side of the laser cut. It is these you must scrape down to "shiny" metal. If you scrape too deep you will see other copper components "showing through" and can potentially kill the cpu.
