when selling stuff on ebay, how are you supposed to provide warranty for the item you sell? and how do u get manufacturer's warranty from something you bought off someone?

Unless you're buying from an Ebay seller like IBM, you're not getting a warranty.

There are authorized sellers in Ebay where they will actually give you a receipt.
Else is a game of luck.

so all those things that are being sold, like laptops, that claim to have warranties are bogus?

some legitimate companies sell through ebay so they may provide their own warranty support. most of the time though you're on your own. if it's a new item you will generally have whatever the manufacturer's warranty is.

I've sold stuff on eBay and people email me months later asking if I have a receipt so they can get their item repaired under the warranty. They don't seem to have any problems.

Hard drives have a manufacturing date and the warranty is based off that if you don't have a receipt. I would imagine laptop makers can determing whether a laptop is covered under warranty based on a serial number. But if a person bought a laptop that was 6 months out of the factory and had it for six months and sold it to you, then there is no warranty. depends on the item.

It depends. When in doubt, I'll offer up the disclaimer that if they need warranty support I'll provide a copy of the original purchase receipt within 'x' days of auction close (just so I don't have to keep around forever). I'm not providing new stuff, so, typically it's a 90day thing in my auctions.

With the receipt the warranty should be valid, because who are they to say if it was a gift from a friend or something.

As a buyer, I basically don't count on warranty via ebay, unless from a legit company as said above or products where a receipt isn't needed.
